Hi. Fired up an old comp and playing a bit of original D single player.
Anyone remember where one can find the Fungal Tome to further the Black
Mushroom quest. Preferably not just what level but if it's in a "stable" or
in the middle of the map or random drop anywhere on the map.

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

That's the one you get *after* you find the mushroom itself, right?
IIRC, it's somewhere (random) on the next level down from where you
found the mushroom. I'd double check myself, but I can't find my
(replacement) original Diablo CD atm ;-(

IIRC it's a random drop on level 9, after you take it to Adria you'll
find the mushroom patch on the same level somewhere. Then you'll get the
demon's brain part of the quest.

Here's what I found. The mushroom patch lit up but when clicked on produced
the auditory, "You cannot use that yet." After lots of cursoring I found
the tome lying on the ground on the same level as the mushroom patch (level
9 to the far right of the bottom of the map, the mushroom patch being at the
far left bottom on the map). I turned it into Adrian. She wanted me to get
a brain from a demon for Pepin. Unfortunately I had killed all the magma
folks from 9 so either I've not run across any other demons or it dropped
and I didn't hear it.

Thanks for your help. :)

Look around wherever you went down right after getting the quest to
get the brain (which was almost always the beginning of level 10 for
me, I'd finish clearing 9 before going up to turn in the quest). The
term "demon" is very ambiguous in this case, it will always drop from
whatever critter you kill first after getting the quest.

Ok reiteration of Mushroom Quest in single player Original Diablo... you can
see the mushroom patch on level 9, but can't interact with it until you find
the Fungal Tome which is on the same level. I found it each time by
exploring the opposite side of where I saw the mushroom patch... i.e. if you
see the patch to the north look on the opposite side of the north (North
being up the screen and South being down the screen). So if you see it NW,
look NE, if you see it SW look for it SE. The fungal tome is NOT on the
fallen hero (he drops a regular spell book). At least in Single Player this
is true. The fungal tome is just laying on the ground. Turn it into Adria.

After fungal tome turn in, use a single target spell to kill any mob on the
fungal tome level or below (I did not test mobs levels other than those on
or deeper than the fungal tome level). The first mob you kill will drop the
brain you turn in to Pepin regardless of whether or not you talk to Pepin
before it drops. Turn this in to him (he is the healer in town). He will
give you an elixir. When you talk to Adria with this in inventory she will
say, bottom line, "keep it". Drink it and gain plus 3 to all attributes
(except maxed stats which will remain the same).

I reiterate, this is all in Single Player mode.

I believe I have now addressed this quest more completely than anything I
found online for original D (albeit I did not do any NG searches, only
Googles and the Wikis and the like).

For original Diablo players who remember solo... I hope this is a refresher
and brings back fond memories. For all others doing this quest for the
first time, I hope this helps and happy hunting! (I think I just gave
myself away to a couple of oldies :) ).

Mushroom Quest refresher... Level 9 you can see but cannot interact with a
mushroom patch until you 1) find the fungal tome on the same level, 2) turn
the tome in to Adria (the witch who sells potions and spells) and 3) return
to level 9 and interact with the mushroom patch. It will say, "woooohhhhh",
and on picking up the mushroom you will say, "Now THAT's a big mushroom.
Turn it in to Adria. She will say something about the healer. You do not
need to talk to him. Go down into the dungeon and use a single target spell
if you are a mage or just kill a single mob on level 9 or deeper if you are
a warrior or rogue. A brain will drop from the first mob you kill after the
Tome turn in. Take this brain to Pepin in town (the healer) he will drop an
elixir. Take this to Adria... she will say, essentially, "keep it". Drink
it and gain plus 3 to all stats not already maxed.

Location of tome relative to mushroom patch. Each time in Single Player I
found the tome on the opposite side of the map. If I found the patch on the
north part of the map (up), I found the tome on the opposite north side
(e.g. if I found patch on NE side I found tome on NW side, if I found tome
on SE side I found tome on SW side).

The Fallen Hero does NOT drop the tome in single player (regardless of what
cheat sites say). He drops a normal spell book.

The above should refresh old original D single players on the quest (more
than I found online in Google searches and the like anyway).

Hope that Helps and Happy Hunting! (oops, may have given myself away there
to some old timers. :) )
