Maximum spell levels

I saw a post here recently where someone mentioned having spell levels of
20 and the intense damage they do. How do you do that??? My sorcerer
(level 30) can't seem to get spells above level 15. Even when I read
another book for a particular spell, the spell level doesn't increase.
What's the secret?

for level 20 spells, you need:
Naj's Light Plate (+1)
Thinking Cap (+2)
Arch-Angel's Staff (of whatever) (+2)
plus that with maxed spells, = level 20 spells.

15 is the maximum base spell level, i.e. the level you can achieve reading
books. However, there are items in the game which increase spell levels.
Naj's Plate increases Spell levels by 1, the Thinking Cap increases spell
levels by 2, Dreamflange increases spell levels by 1, Archangel's Staves
increase spell levels by 2, and Aguinara's Hatchet increases spell level's
by 1.

So, if you wear Naj's Light Plate (1), Thinking Cap (2) and carry an AA
Staff (2) preferably of Wizardry, you enhance your spell levels by 5. Add
this to the base 15 and you get a total of spell level 20.

In order to achieve this, however, you sacrifice Armor Class since
neither Naj's Light Plate nor the Thinking Cap have decent Armor
Class. As a result, you have to learn to never get meleed, and an
item of Harmony is advisable if not essential.

I prefer more AC, so my primary mage uses the Royal Circlet, Saintly
Full Plate of Sorcery (I haven't found the Awesome of Sorcery yet),
Dreamflange, Stormshield and various jewelry. While my Spell
Level is only 16, I can withstand some pretty heavy melee and still
fire off spells. Occasionally, when I don't need quite as much AC,
or I have to have extra fire power, I'll put on the TC instead of the RC.
While this reduces my overall stats, I end up with level 18 spells.
Kinda nice so long as I'm not facing triple immunes.

But that doesn't help you against stunlock :)
3 Maelstorms attacking simulatousnely and AC under 200 in hell/hell is
*certain* death unless you get VERY lucky and manage to teleport away... Or
cast a single Fireball somewhere between those hits :)

It's certainly great that you haven't quit Diablo entirely.
