What are the various options for getting +skills for a necromancer? I
am designing a necromancer build, and I am hoping to be able to come
up with at least +4 or maybe +6 to my Necromancer skills, more if I
can.
Whats the max you can get? How easy is it to get +4 or more?
What are some items you can get +skills from? Yes, I have looked at
the Arreat summit, and some of the ones I have seen are:
Weapon: +2 Necromancer Skills dagger or Wand, BlackHand Key,
GravenSpine, Ume's Lament
Ring 1: +1 Stone of Jordan (I dont have any though)
Ring 2: +1 Stone of Jordan (I dont have any though)
Amulet: +1 Eye of Eltich (spelling?), +2 Mara's Kaliedoscope, +1
Necomancer Amulet, +2 Necromancer Amulet (level 90 monsters only?)
Armor: +1 ViperMagi armor, +1 Silks of the Victor
Helm: +1 Lore Helm, +1 Tarnhelm, +1 Necromancer Circlet, +2
Necromancer Circlet (level 90 monsters only?)
Shield: +1 Sigon's, +2 Necromancer Homunculus
Boots: none?
Gloves: none?
Belt: none?
So, I can see that +11 is possible ... can a Necromancer get higher
than that in +skills? If so, how?
I also know that Trangouls set gives +3 skills and some +tree stuff,
and 50% resist all, but that seems really hard to build that set, and
honestly, I'd rather have Homunculus and Smoke and Blackhand Key (or
Ume's) and Wormskull or a TarnHelm than to have the set, because the
set really limits your slots. Maybe if it didnt prevent use of the
Humonculus, I'd go for it. Hmm.
Help?

easily found through gambling -- but your level has to be so very, very high.

+20 is about as good as it gets.

Nah, use a white wand... many more plus skills on it.

No, go with a +3 to a skills tab. Usually, this is either summoning or P&B.
> Necomancer Amulet, +2 Necromancer Amulet (level 90 monsters only?)
No, you can find them in act2 hell. They have a lvl 67 REQ on them. You can
also gamble them easily. If you are on west, I have a ton of them.

Again, I would go with a +3 to a skills tab helm. The one I used on my necro
is +3 P&B skills, 24 Damage reduced, with 2 sockets added with perfect
skulls in them.
> Necromancer Circlet (level 90 monsters only?)
Again, no.

No. Use either a Rhyme for the mana regen, resists and MF, or use a necro
head with +2 skills and pluesss to other skills in your field of expertise,
or the VISC defender.
>
> Boots: none?
Make a pair of caster boots. They are by FAR the best boots a necro can
make. As they only require a thul rune, perfect amythest and a shitty jewel,
do not be afraid to make LOTS of them. The ones my necro uses are 30% fast
RW, 12% max mana, 15% mana regen, 18 mana, 23%MF.

Frosties, if you are going to cast bone spirits, as you will need the mana
boost.

here many choices abound, my preference was always nightsmoke.

OK, let us add
3 on hat
3 on ammy
2 on shield
2 on wand
1 on armor
2 on rings
that's 13 already, and you can also load up on charms with +2 to a skills
tab. Getting your particular branch to 30-25 is not very hard. As mine was
mostly a P&B necro, his bone spirit and corpse explosion were both lvl 34 or
36, depending on which tab I was using at the time.

Again, there is no wand like the white wand. If the wand you make it from
has nice skills, it simply is 5 orders of magnitude better than any other.
Mickey
Thanks for the advice on +skills. I didnt realize people were cranking
up one skill tab over the others ... but I think it makes sense. With
the equipment example you gave me, I would have +7 all and +13 to one
tab. I think that is enough. My biggest problem will be getting stones
of Jordan ... I've never had one (I dont trade much). Most of the
other gear you mentioned and/or I mentioned, well I have it.
What do you think of this build?
Golem Mastery 20, Poison Nova 20, Bone Spirit 20, Corpse Explosion 20,
and all other Necromancer skills 1 each. That comes to 106, which is
level 95.
Of course, I tend to play no higher than level 80-85 or so with most
characters, so I may limit my base Corpse Explosion to 5 points. If I
collect +13 to Poison and Bone, I think a CE of 18 would be plenty.
Oh, and how easy/hard is it to get max resists in hell? And how
necessary is it?
As for the offer on the spare amulets, I appreciate it, but sadly I am
on useast. :)
Thanks for the advice so far, and for any additional advice you might
have.
Lewis
After reading all your hype about Necro's I decided to start one
myself last week. Up to that point I had only gotten one up to level
14 and deserted him since he was going to be a poison dagger guy
before 1.08 changed my mind.
This guy is twinked and I helped him to Act 5 and past the Ancients at
level 20, then got him a Barb merc. I'm pretty much following your
"guide". He's just level 33 so far.

I'm using Umes at the moment. I'll have to look for a nice wand to
socket.

Wearing two stones and a +1 rare Necro ammy with 26% MF.

I'll have to look you up after another 34 levels. ;)

Wearing Spirit Shroud now, but looking for a 35% Viper and an Um. ;)
Hadn't thought about the mage plate (that I don't have any way).

Wearing a 46% Tarn, not socketed.

Using the 1.08 Visc that I gave to Stephen before I started the Necro
and asked for it back. Well, he wasn't using it. ;) Figured I'd
start looking for the Homunculus for the skills and resists, etc. May
make a Rhyme too.

That's a good idea. I have crap boots. Treads, IIRC.

Yes, I'm wearing Frosties.

Using Nightsmoke now, but will probably switch to Gloomstrap.

Ok, I'm only at +9 all, but that's not bad at level 33. I have no
+skill charms, which are +1 to a tab, not +2, as I'm sure you know.

I've got the gloves and armor (traded away the head) but I'm not sure
it's worth wearing.

I've gotta figure out what all those curses and such do. Right now I
just summon a Fire Golem and apply AD and LR while the golem and Wulf
create corpses for me to explode. In a nasty fight I will do a little
Life Tap to save Wulf's exposed rear. When I remember I spam a few
Bone Spirits to help out a bit. With over 600 mana I can spare a few.
Are the bone skills worth getting? I'm thinking of putting a point in
shield and wall at least, just to play with and maybe as some
protection. Not sure about prison. Which golem works out best for
this type of build? I don't like a lot of minions, but an extra tank
is nice.
> What do you think of this build?
I'm not Mickey, but I'll throw my 2c in, too.

I'm not completely fond of it, myself. Maxing golem mastery is all well
and good, but that doesn't increase the damage done by the golem. Now
you've got some fierce offensive stuff in that list, but if you want the
golem to be a tank and just draw fire while you're casting BS and CE then
it would be a Real Good Idea to add some Summon Resist, especially if
you're planning on going forever with this build (level 95 is awfully
high). I'd be limiting corpse explosion and throwing a few extra in
SResist and a few extra in Amplify Damage.

I have no interest in the golems doing damage. Since I have a thorns
merc and will easily have +5 to all necromancer skills, and points in
every skill, I will have at least 6 revives and a nice beefy golem for
reflecting physical damage with the thorns merc. The ability of the
golem to personally damage is irrelevant for the build, but survival
of the golem is important.
> it would be a Real Good Idea to add some Summon Resist, especially if

Well, I agree that 95 is high, but 80 is not. That means I could max
mastery, max poison nova, max bone spirit, and put 5 in CE, and 1 in
everything else. Thats 91 points, or level 80.
Now, I have no really good gear, but even I can easily scrape up +5
skills. I have never needed more than 5 in amp damage, or lower
resist, and those are for use with corpse explosion. I can easily get
a couple of +2 or +3 skill tree (poison and bone) items, bringing CR
itself up to 14 or 15. Lower Resist is also for Poison Nova and Bone
Spirit also. Amp damage also affects the thorns damage reflected by my
merc ... it stacks, unlike amp and iron maiden. Also, I dont think I
will need more than 6 in summon resist after skills, and same for most
of the curses and one pointers.
So, yes, the build is highly dependent on items, but I have some of
them, and will acquire others.
However, I do appreciate the advice, and I am open to counter-advice
or other ideas.

Is this another crafted item? How do you make this wand, and what does
it do?

The golem mast is a bit of overkill. I would put some points into revives
and skell master instead. Also, lower res is a nice skill, depending on who
you have revived. You'd be amazed at how quickly 10 blood lords can take out
mephisto if you have a decent lower res.

CE and BS are the 2 skills I pump ruthlessly. For one thing, necros level
best where monsters collect in large groups. The cow level is heaven for a
necro with a potent CE... I have often run it solo, and found cows dead a
screen and a half away.

Not easy, not necessary. Lightning is, the rest are not. I would look for a
nice charm or 3 to boost it. My mecro carried a grand charm that was +36
life, +30% lightning res. That charm was passed along to my sorc, and then
to my zon.

Best advice I can give you is to find a guillaume's face and park it on a
barb merc. That, along with a decent armor and sword will give you the means
to generate those first few corpses you need to start exploding corpses.

Nice mana at that level. My necro ended up with about 1710 mana and 1700
life. The rest of the stats are about useless ot a necro.

Prison is useless as teats on a bull. I have never been a fan of bone walls,
but I have seen some use them.

Yes, a magical pair... Act1 normal is the place ot buy them, although better
purchased or gambled for a Gheed's.

A 2 socket wand, and DOL-IO.
From http://www.diabloii.net/items/runes/runewords-weapons.shtml
Hit causes monster to flee 25%
20% Faster Cast Rate
Magic Damage Reduced by 4
+13 to mana
+10 to vitality
+3 to bone and poison skills
+4 to skeleton mastery
+2 to bone spear
+3 to bone armor
and you also get whatever skills were on the wand to start with. This is an
uber item for a necro, and the runes are not all that hard to annex. The
tough part is finally settling on the 2 socket wand you will use.

It's a runeword. Level 35 required. Works on realm and open.
Dol + Io
Wand keeps the inherent +skills stuff and gets:
Hit causes monster to flee 25%
20% faster cast rate
magic damage reduced by 4
+13 mana
+10 vitality
+3 bone and poison skills
+4 skeleton mastery
+2 bone spear
+3 bone armor
So if you were to find a nice 2 socket wand with +2-3 B&P skills and +2-3
bone spear, this one wand could boost the tree by 5-6 and bone spear by
9-11 points.
Truly the absolute best item a Necro will ever hope to get.

By BS here you are referring to Bone Spirit, or Bone Spear? I have had
Bone Spear maxed, but I have never really used Bone Spirit. What is the
benefit? I believe that it can't really be targetted, which seems a
drawback.

Something I have found is that unlike other characters, cold damage can
be a hinderance to a skelemancer or CE necro... no bodies, no fuel for the
machines of war.
Can you get a non-magic wand with +skill tabs on it? I thought that
was a magic prefix and so the runeword wouldnt work?
Or am I wrong?
Lewis
It always hits, does more damage, and will track a monster even if it
wanders off or teleports away.

Right, which is why I make sure my barb can't do any cold damage.
Mickey

Just as a little gloat, here, I just bought a Golemancer's Wand from
Malah. +3 to summoning skills and +5 to bone spirit. Hee hee. 8-)
Doh, i think you're right and i got wands and orbs mixed up.
Orbs get built in +skill points for sorcs, but it's heads for necros.
Xocyll
HOWEVER... You can find a grey (needed for runeword) 2 socket wand with +3
CE, +3 BS, +3 Skel mast, for example
Mickey
Some were, some weren't... sooooo
**ALERT** **ALERT** **ALERT**
For all you casters out there who do not yet know this:
You can still make lesser caster boots. The recipe is:
1 perfect amethyst
1 lame jewel of any type
1 thul rune
1 pair of magical plain old leather boots
The resultant boots with have +man mana, +mana regen, +mana, and 1-3 random
mods. Now, my necro has a pair of greater caster boots, which currently
cannot be made. They are 30% fast RW, 12% mana regen, 18% max mana, 18 mana
and 23%MF. I can't think of what would quallify as better boots for a necro,
sorc, elemental druid or any other caster.

At level 16 or 17, something tells me he has a while before Creepy
would be able to use that ;-) Nonetheless, he's probably the only
character on my primary account who has room in his stash, and there
are 3 characters (and 5 potential mules waiting to be created) on the
secondary account who have plenty, so I'll be looking out for
2-socketed wands to make this with. Thanks! :-)
There are so many +2 necro wands nowadays its crazy.

More robust than an armor that gives you 35% resist all and fast cast? Like
which, for example?

Not as good as a tab specific hat with some nice mods.

Also these tend to be less than ideal. A 1,08 Visc is far superior, for it's
+2 skills, extra blocking and faster blocking, and it's 80 life.

again, you can easily get the tree of your choice to +10 or 11 without a

ald gave me the site to download AR last night. I got it downloaded,

No, *some*body got me going on the Ancestral Recall mod, I still

I see. Tell me who this cad is that's depriving you of some
well-earned battle.net field time, and I shall give him a stern

Nice to see some movement here finally ;-) Sis-AR is still at level
42, but the experience bar is moving a *little* bit now that she's in
Act 3, and the Rogue leveled up from 35 to 36, so there's hope that
she'll actually level before Act 5 ;-) I'm planning on taking out
Diablo in the Swampy Pit, but of course I'll go into Act 4 for Izzy
and Heyfatso, at least in Normal. NM and Hell I'll still have to do at
*least* Izzy, I won't skip two skill points ;-)

D*mn, behind again ;-) Killing the Champion Diablo in the Swampy Pit
today took Sis-AR from halfway to level up to level 43, then killing
the Fanatic Diablo (apparently the last, since she said *something*
after killing him, but I didn't catch it, and I didn't see any others
around) got her about halfway to 44. Hmm, level 40 when you finish
Normal, huh? Apparently they didn't count on my slow playing style,
and being stubborn about clearing the Crypt before leaving Act 1 ;-)
You two got me distracted from Bnet also. I loaded up AR last
Thursday and haven't been on Bnet since, thus Felina-AR was born.
Felina was level 10 before finding the entrance to the Den of Evil.
Those Nests provide good xp at that level. Still poking things with
an etherial javelin she found Corpsfire for a nice bit of startup
gear. I wondered if he dropped the same set every time so I started a
new game and killed him again. After selling all the gear except the
soj I realized it would make good merc gear too, so I killed him the
third time and hired a lvl 11 cold Sorc. My first Tarn was 50% and
the third was 47%. Not bad.
Wearing two soj's her javelin damage was improved a bit with lightning
and she set out after BloodRaven. The bow droped by BloodRaven
finally let her put away the javs and be a real bowazon. I skipped
the crypt in favor of rescuing Cain. When I came back later I decided
the crypt was just taking too long with the 4-24 bow I was using, so I
sent Felina on her way to Andy. She finished act one at level 21,
exactly half of the level ald got to, but still high for act 1. I
don't know how you did it unless you found a lot better bow than I
did.
Act 2 went well. She found the Ancient Tunnels at level 25 and came
out after clearing it once at level 31, just a hair away from 32.
Another nice place for xp. Duriel went down easily with a level 4
Valk to hold him down. Valks sure do last a lot longer in this mod.
Up to level 23 she was making do with mana pots and the extra mana
from the two sojs and Lynemo. But she finally cubed three rare rings
and got a rare ammy with 4% mana steal, which helped considerably.
Act 3 was a bit tedious. Still using the same bow I attempted the
Diablo's in the Swampy pit, where she met her first (and only, so far)
death. A couple more attempts and it became clear that this bow was
just not going to cut it for him, so I moved on to get him in Act 4.
The rest of the act went well, though slow with the low damage bow and
the high life of the monsters. I was mostly playing in players 2, but
a bit in players 4 and once or twice in players 1 when I wanted to get
past an area quickly. Since players 1 is like normal players 5,
players 2 was quite slow enough.
Somewhere in here she picked up Sigon's gloves and armor which she
used to replace the Twitch she was wearing. The 30% IAS and 10% life
steal helped quite a bit. I also cubed the Treads with a set pair of
boots to get a pair of 107% faster run boots, which made getting
around in Act 3 much easier.
In act 4 she finally replaced her bow with one bought from Jamella.
It was really not much better but had 5% chance for Amplify damage.
Unfortunately I never saw it work. I would see the curse casting
animation, but never the curse effect. :(
Diablo went down after many GA's and it was off to act 5. Here she
bought her current bow, a Short War Bow with 11-42 damage. After
killing Shank and Eldrich (both twice) she hit level 40.
Her current equipment is still pretty much as mentioned. Two sojs,
rare 4% mana leach ammy, Sigons gloves and armor, rare belt to replace
lynemo, crafted fast boots, 50% Tarn and the Short War Bow. Her stash
is filling up with runes and gems. She's still using the Cold Sorc
and he's helping much more than I expected. He's wearing some of the
nice gear I found along the way including Mosers shield and some
exceptional set armor I forgot the name of. I'm going to have to see
if I can get the mod to work on the Mac so I can create a mule for
these gems and runes. The rune drops are nice, having found a Ko in
Act 1.
I guess I needed a break from Bnet and this is working out nicely. I
recently started an Axe Barb (lvl 30 so far) and the Necro (level 44)
to keep me interested, but it wasn't working well. I'm not giving up
on Realms, but in AR I actually have a chance at finding a Windforce.
:)
>little purdy baby Diablo champs to play with? this trip does sound fun :)
No, more like Diablos on steroids, they're harder to kill than the
regular one, and the layout of the Disused Reliquary is quite a bit
different from the CS, so getting Guided to work without stepping into
his LBoD was even more of a challenge than usual ;-) The reward for
killing them in Act 3 is that you can skip all of Act 4, if you want,
along with a *huge* amount of experience points (half a level for each
at level 42 1/2 going into the battle). It *was* a lot of fun, if you
ignore the near heart attack I had when the second (Fanatic) one
showed up ;-)
heh it sounds like the not recommended area of V&K where there were 7 or so
of them on roids.
Does sound fun tho. How about a highly mod specific fanfic from you or SvH?

7?!? More like 70 ;-) Remember, I Warped my way through those areas in
SP (and if you *don't* remember, some of the Spot Reports are on the
website in my sig, down at the bottom of the page) ;-)
>Does sound fun tho. How about a highly mod specific fanfic from you or SvH?
Funny you should mention that, I have a "players 8" specific fanfic in
the works, which may get released soon if I don't get any further
feedback from Stephen (admittedly, he deserves a *lot* of the credit
for it, as he wrote some major parts of it) ;-) I'm better at Spot
Reports, and while there were a couple of battles worthy of one early
on, there haven't been lately. I'll try to write up one when I come to
a battle that merits it again, though ;-)
heh I think I only saw the initial 7 angry Ds, that was enough - teleporting
through there didn't occur to me even less, appeal ;)

I'd say that the Hell difficulty battle with Moe, Fanatic Diablo, the
Ancients, and Baal could be memorable, if we ever get that far.

Ok, I will, as soon as I can *find* it ;-)

Yeah, the battle with Moe in *Normal* would have been a good
candidate, if I'd thought about writing one up at the time. Suffice it
to say that she probably would have had an easier time if she'd waited
until she'd cleared Act 5, and thus been about 15 levels higher ;-)
The Ancients and Baal should be coming up shortly in Normal, the game
that I started last night is still up and running, with the first
waypoint in Act 4 found (stupid stubborn me, I'll probably end up
killing D again, just to see how much less difficult he is than the
Fanatic Diablo was. Unless she ups her current 5% resistance to
everything except fire (95%), she'll probably have a harder time
getting to him than beating him).

Yeah, he drops the same all the time, and I dropped the Tarn and the
Twitch (or was that from BloodRaven?) on a Rogue. With the +skills, I
had to get her a cold bow so that she'd chill the monsters all of the
time (she's a cold Rogue, but that Fire Arrow from the + skills wasn't
chilling), but she's firing off an occasional Freezing Arrow (usually
at *just* the right time), and I *think* I've seen Guideds coming from
her, too.

Nope, just stubborn ;-) Her two bows are both rares in about the 6-17
range, the primary with mana leech and the backup with life leech. The
Crypt *was* tough at first, until the levels started piling up and the
dex bonus really kicked in ;-)

at all :-(

Yeah, they scale to the players 10 level (since I'm always playing at
"players 2", except in the first game with Stephen, where I hadn't
read the readme file yet).

I'll bet! ;-) Sis-AR is still using the Nokozan Relic, which along
with her Hotspur boots is what gives her that 95% Fire Resistance.
*Very* handy so far, she hasn't suffered any deaths since the later
stages of the Crypt (knocks on wooden head).

Two hours worth of Guideds with a lesser bow *did* eventually take
them down, but since I stupidly want to take on Heyfatso for the gems
and the rune, I'll probably go after him in Act 4, too ;-)

Nice! I got pretty lucky in Act 3, other than milling around for an
hour or so trying to find my way out of the Great Marsh. Once I found
the exit I'd missed, the Swampy Pit came up quickly, followed by the
waypoint and (just as I had to leave for work) the entrance to Lower
Kurast. I left the game running while I was gone and found the
waypoint in Lower Kurast pretty quickly once I got home ;-)

I've been offered one or two of those, but can't afford to give up the
mana leech on the primary bow. Jamella also offered me a 3-23 bow with
mana leech, but it didn't have the 1-3 cold that the rare one has. I
opted for the slightly lower leech and the higher cold damage (have
one charm that adds cold, so I'm prepared to give up the bow
eventually).

I found that one, along with two of the ones just below that Pul in
Act 1. My stash is also pretty full of gems and runes, but remember
that you can cube any three like runes now, and any 3 perfect gems
cube into a perfect skull. I'll do that last one more once I replace
the gemmed bow I used to take out Moe with one that has perfect gems
in it (looking for two Rubies and an Emerald, have the Emerald and one
of the Rubies so far).
Don't forget to take out the Crypt when you go back for the Cow level
(which, with the waypoint, you can do to your hearts content. You
don't even need to get the leg, once you've beaten Baal (or Diablo?)
you just hit the waypoint and go down there. You should still get some
decent experience points if you decide to take on Moe, and the special
Andys have to be experienced at least once ;-)

Or an Eaglehorn or a Burrito, here ;-) The thing that keeps drawing me
back to SP and mod games is the ability to do things like I did today,
find the City of the Damned waypoint just before I had to leave for
work, but since I didn't want to run into the LEB who was right beside
it (and only dropped a ruby!) again, leave the game running and I'll
come back to it when I'm done reading and posting in here. I do that
just about every night, makes it *much* easier to make progress in my
limited time in the morning than if I was playing on the Realms and
had to start over from the last waypoint. Of course, this would be
*so* much easier to do if Blizzard had left the "Save game" option in
SP, but we're not going to go into *that* rant again ;-)

He's having a slower time of things than the assassin, since he's more
dependant on equipment. Right now he's getting by with a socketed
flail with a couple of topaz and a sapphire, with a variety of
different shields. He recently picked up a three socket Horadric,
which he'll fill with diamonds until he finds something better. He
mostly Zeals with the flail, although I've popped a few points into
Smite which he uses against LEB's and the like. Oh, and the sig is
out of date... he's actually level 25 now.

The Magic Guild realm seems to work just fine. I don't seem to have
the itch to play online much at the moment, hence the low level
character. I guess I can't blame battle.net for that. AR is still
good fun for me though, making a very nice chance from 'vanilla' D2,
which got a bit pretty plain for me after months and months of play.

I can't get the Cow Level waypoint to work for me. I'm pretty sure I
triggered it the first time around when I hit Black Marsh, but once I
killed Baal, the Cow Level waypoint was greyed out. After that I went
back to the Black Marsh and walked over the waypoint there and still
couldn't get to the Cow Level. When I got there the traditional way

couldn't find a waypoint there to trigger. What am I doing wrong?

I took the Sorc since it was available and I figured I had the arrow

him a chance. I replaced him with a Barb in Act 5 when I saw how many
cold resist monsters there were.

I didn't have enough pots to last 10 minutes, much less two hours.
Being 20 levels lower probably affected my success here. BTW, Heph is
a seal boss now, not at the Forge, but you still have to kill him to
get the hammer. The Infector is at the Forge with 10,000 Iron Golems.
Bring lots of arrows. May as well do Diablo since you need to pop at
least one seal any way. ;)

I missed the Great Marsh completely and felt no need to go hunting for
it.

I believe I mentioned in email that I switched to a lower damage bow
with some poison. Last night I switched back. I needed the extra
physical damage for leach and the poison became insignificant as I
will explain below. ;)

Yes, I have done that a bit to relieve some space. It was painful,
but I actually cubed three Shaels. Is Moe in the Crypt in Act 1?

Will do, althoug it may be a bit too easy in Normal at this point. ;)

I haven't done that yet, but I haven't had to clear too many things
twice.
Now for my update.
Last night I took the time to print out and look over the cube list.
My first "creation" was the scroll from Mara with a perfect skull (I
had two so far) to give me a +25% resist all Grand Charm. I then
cubed one of those major elemental damage Grand Charms from a charm
and three relativel low level runes. That alone pretty much trippled
my damage output. You *have* to make one of these.
I then did 2-3 Pin runs and got junk, so I continued with my questing.
I made my way to the Ancients Way and found the new Icy Cellar,
filled with Baals Minions. These guys are pretty nasty alone, but
they came in boss packs and the place was filled with them. My Barb
Merc didn't last long, but using FA helped him a bit. This place is
worth some more serious XP. I think she leveled up 5-6 times clearing
this area. Snapchip was a mean nasty LEB who Took may arrows, but was
no real problem since I trapped him across the water and kept that
little used spell "Slow Missiles" going while I GA'd him. He dropped
three rare jewels and a rare ammy and maybe a rune (not sure).
At one point I went back to town for some more arrows and stopped my
Mara for a quick healing. She was kind enough to hand me another
scroll since I had cubed mine instead of reading it. Very nice.
After finding a gem shrine to get my third perfect skull I now have
three +25% resist all Grand Charms, and I still have yet to read the
scroll.
I had forgotten that the new cow level was down there somewhere and I
missed it. I was running out of time, but went ahead and fought the
Ancients before heading to bed. I parked a decoy up my the WW guy and
touched the alter and ran back a bit. GA's took out the first two who
were distracted by my Valk and Barb. I then went to look for the
third and found him happily WW'ing away at my decoy. I really haven't
used decoy much in this mod but they must have many more HP's than in
normal LOD. He went down easily too. The drops were pretty good with
each one dropping 4-5 rares. The 2 Mil XP put the Zon up to level 56
and she is still in Normal. So much for the level 40 estimate. I
haven't cleared many areas and have repeated very few areas.
I guess I really should get on with it and head to NM. Maybe there I
can find a better bow. I'm sure I won't be doing much leveling for a
while in the early acts though. ;)

Something tells me, no. I think he has been on realms about as much
as you have lately (unless you are hiding on an account I don't know
about these days).
ald gave me the site to download AR last night. I got it downloaded,
but not installed. It came highly recomended.

Ok, let me know when you get back to playing on it, I'll follow in
your wake once again ;-) AR *is* a lot of fun ATM, I *really* should
have known what was going to pop out of the third seal in the CS last
night, considering what was around the Hellforge, but, silly me, I
expected a new Succubus boss instead ;-) Oh, and the regular Diablo
was *much* easier than the Fanatic, he took just a hair over 700
arrows, and dropped her a *much* higher damage rare Edge bow,
conveniently socketed so that she could drop a skull into it and get
her mana (and life) leech :-)

That reminds me... I should go find the Hell forge at some point.
The Hell forge Hammer and Mephie's soul stone are taking up space I
could be using for my runes collection.

So far I've only taken on regular Diablo with the assassin, who of
course was very easy pickings, since doesn't need decent equipment to
get her offense going. In the AR mod, her Lightning Sentry traps are
doing 500+ max damage per shot per trap, and the skill isn't even
maxed yet!

Hmm, I don't know :-( Have you tried hitting the waypoint again now
that you've cubed the entrance open? When I was experimenting to see
if Sis could play in this mod, she was able to hit the waypoint
immediately (but still ended the game when she killed her first cow),
but she *did* open the Cow level in Normal before.

I'll try it now. The game is just an Alt+Tab away so I'll have a
look...
Nope, the Secret Cow Level way point is greyed out, even though I've
stepped on the way point marker in the Black Marsh at least twice.
Okay, I'll try going via Black Marsh...
Nope, that didn't work either. The Secret Cow Level way point is
still greyed out.

Thanks. I'd like to check it out, if you still have it. I have a
+2 skills, 10% faster cast, +5 minimum damage, +45 life, +15 mana,
fire resistance +23% amulet waiting for him when he reaches level 67,
but it'll be a while before he gets that far. He could certainly use
something in the interim.

Actually, I think I was still using the 5% life leech, +1 to mana
after each kill bow (which became my backup until Diablo's drop) that
I found at the end of that first game with Stephen, at least when I
started in the Crypt. Come to think of it, I *know* that was still the
primary when I was up against Moe, 'cause I was running up to town to
refill my mana, after using *all* of my mana potions, before I gemmed
a bow to use on him.

Yeah, I'd looked forward to that area because the readme said that it
dropped Act 5 items, but the only Act 5 types that I found were Super
Healing and Mana potions :-(

*Now* you tell me ;-) Interesting, the Infector dropped a Hellforge
Hammer for me (and Strafe and Guided both at 170% damage took out him
and his golems without having to use *too* many arrows ;-) ) and then
Heyfatso dropped another. I'd have been pretty pissed if I had to go
all the way back to the Hellforge from the CS, since I *think* I shut
down the game for a while (or at least thought about it) after
backtracking from the River WP to find the Hellforge. As noted
elsewhere, Diablo was *much* easier than his Fanatic brother, only
took a little more than 700 arrows (silly me, I put the other 1050
into my stash before the battle, so I had to switch the arrows from my
backup bow in the final moments). He managed to take out Abhaya, my
Rogue, about halfway through the battle, but the Valk (gotta love +3
to all skills from the get-go ;-) ) managed to stay alive long enough
to keep him pinned in the corner, and allow me to leech (much more
than) enough mana to recast her at will.

I'd have had no problems with skipping it, but on my map it was

Believe me, he *won't* be easy, not if he hits you ;-) If, on the
other hand, you can Guided him *without* accidentally letting him out
of his room, he may still be worth a fair amount of experience points.

Hmm, sounds like I need to read the cube list again ;-) I'm still
flirting with death as far as resists, as has become my way. The 95%
fire resistance from the Hotspur Boots and the (N-something, not in
game now so I can't easily look it up) Am *has* come in handy, but I
dropped the 5% to all from the Lenymo for another of D's drops, a
4-row belt with 34 to life and 30 poison resistance. Cold and
Lightning are now back at 0%, although I didn't have *too* hard a time
in the River and the CS (despite the fact that there *were* OKs in
both) with 5%. I'll have to check out the elemental damage ones,
though, I have a bunch of low level ones taking up *way* too much room
in my pack ;-)

Nice! Maybe it's time to rethink my resistance strategy, although
clearing room in the pack for 3 Grand Charms might prove difficult ;-)

Hmm, I thought the Decoy was just an exact replica of you, including
resists and HPs? Mine (which *do* get some use) do seem to last longer
than usual, but I put that down to the +3 skills (which add to the
time *if* she doesn't get hit enough to wipe her out). Maybe you're
right, the Decoy certainly lasted a *lot* longer than I expected
against DeSeis last night, although I don't think the one against the
Grand Vizier lasted all that long ;-)
The only thing I can figure for the level 40 estimate is that they
figured people would play it like on the Realms, using the Staff
shortcut and the killing of D in Act 3 to skip major parts of the game
(and *not* go into the Crypt).
>I guess I really should get on with it and head to NM. Maybe there I

Like that will be anything new? ;-) Try killing D again, he did drop
me a nice rare Edge bow, forget the exact damage but it was *much*
higher than mine (IIRC the minimum was at or better than the max I
had) and had a socket that a Perfect skull fit in nicely to fill the
leeching needs for now ;-)
>*Now* you tell me ;-) Interesting, the Infector dropped a Hellforge

Ahem. I recall asking you in our last game whether there were any
changes to the amazon skills, to which I'm pretty sure you answered in
the negative. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised to find
that even a level 1 Strafe provides a +40% damage bonus. Very nice
indeed. Maybe I'll max it. And keep Vitality at the base level.
That'll keep both you and tcells happy, I'm sure. I've never played a
0 Vit Strafazon before. It's still Cast Valk, Shoot, Shoot, Shoot,
right? :-)

Don't recast at Will, recast at Diablo. Sorry, I work with a guy
named Will and he really makes me appreciate the phrase "Fire at
Will".
The Infector apparently drops the hammer when he's in a good mood, but
he didn't give me one. I had to backtrack after killing Heph, before
facing Diablo. I was surprised that Heph came out of the seal alone
instead of with a crowd of minion Hephs.

Well, I did finish Baal off and went back to do both cow levels.
Nothing really worth keeping and not much XP either. Unfortunately I
dumped several items I was saving on the ground to cube some stuff and
forgot to get it before exiting the game. :( The only significant
loss was a TalRasha Mask I should have been wearing instead of the
Tarn.
I then decided to head on into NM and do the Crypt there instead of
Normal. I managed to get down to the Jail level 1 WP. Now I see what
you were up against. I only got the Zon killed once but it was slow
going with much recasting of Valk and several Barb deaths. Time to
start looking for Moe.

I replaced a few lower level ones with the Grand charms. Now I have
four Grand and one large and one small. I'm not sure what my
resistances are in NM, but they are at least 45% all after I finally
read the fourth scroll. ;)

I did manage to come across a bow with 16-44 or so damage to help out,
but with only 4% leach it is having trouble keeping up with the mana
still. GA is no problem since it only costs 1 mana, but Strafe has
problems.

Andariel was certainly an interesting lady with a minimal Life ball.
One quick volley of green puffballs and I was running back towards
town screaming like a little girl, chugging the reds and antidote
potions and hoping for the best.

Hmm, I'm running out of ideas :-( Ok, last couple before I give up and
say I'll see what's up when I get there (which *may* still be a while,
I found the first underground waypoint in Act 5 this morning, but
couldn't for the *life* of me find the one in the Arreat Plateau, and
I'm going to have to go back at some point and rescue the Barbs, since
I didn't even see one on my trip through there): You said you'd cubed
the entrance open, right? Assuming you didn't kill the King, try doing
it again and, with the entrance open, check the waypoints. That
probably won't work, but this other one *may*: Still with the entrance
open, try going to the Black Marsh and coming through there and see if
you can step back to the Cow level. If *that* doesn't work, you may
have to find the stupid waypoint in the level (I promise you it *was*
there in Sis's game), or write to the author of the mod and see if
*he* has any ideas.

Yes, you did, and yes, I said that, but that *was* my first game and I
got to what, level 12 in it? So I hadn't noticed yet, sue me ;-) Both
Strafe and Guided now add 10% damage per skill level, so when maxed
they're over 200%.

Never played a 0 Vit *anything* before (and probably never will, the
habit of adding one point per level is *way* too strong ;-) ), but
yeah, that sums up the life of a Strafazon pretty well. Oh, you forgot
one thing: Cast Decoy when the Valk is too busy polishing her nails to
bother to come over while the monsters are swarming you ;-)

Yeah, and since Xocyll says you *need* the +25% health charms in NM

Just don't let him out of his room (assuming he's in one like he was
when I found him) and get something with elemental damage (half an
hour into the battle, with all of my mana gone from Guideds and both
deaths already past me, his life bar hadn't even *moved*. I switched
to a Gemmed bow at that point, and while it *did* move slowly, at
least it started moving), and use GA, he likes to move around a *lot*.

Ok, it may be cheating, but the maps are on the site, I use them
liberally ;-)
It's actually in the Drifter Canyon or some such, easy to miss if
you're not using the maps and/or exploring everywhere.
>I thought it was supposed to be a replica too, but I doubt I could

Yeah, I don't think I would have survived as long as she did against
De Seis, especially with only 5% resistance to everything except Fire,
but like I said she went down pretty quickly against the Grand Vizier,
so I'm not sure what's going on there ;-)
>Well, I didn't do the crypt and still finished at level 56.

My experience bar started moving again as soon as I got underground in
Act 5 this morning, she's now level 44 and moving up again (and the
Rogue is either level 42 or 43, *her* experience bar started moving
again long before mine did) :-)

Hmm, I'm not having too much problems there, and I only have 3% from
the perfect skull. Your bow is a little better than mine, too, I
checked last night/this morning, IIRC it's 12-36. Maybe it's a playing
style thing, since I've always used Strafe primarily I've learned to
switch to the left button (used to be Normal Attack, now Guided) when
there are less than 3 monsters on the screen. Also, what level Strafe
do you have? There was a point relatively early (level 6 or 7?
Somewhere around there) where adding *one* extra point made all the
difference in the world, I was suddenly gaining mana against smaller
packs instead of losing it ;-)

Well, today Danzaelle, thanks to her low Vitality design, gained the
dubious distinction of being my first character to be slain... by a

Hmmm, quite possibly I *did* kill the King, since I quite possibly
said to myself, 'self, you can kill the King, since the readme file
says you can kill the King since there's a waypoint, which you
activated in Black Marsh.' Now, it's also quite possible that I
*didn't* listen to myself though. Sometimes it's best to ignore ones
self in order to filter out some of the excess noise and general
insaneness that is sometimes to be found there.
Self, shut up now. Okay.

That's a lot better than my bow, but then again, I'm still only in act
2/normal. I started off using the Vidala's Barb that BloodRaven
dropped and then, later on once I needed some mana steal, upgraded to
a long bow with two skulls and a perfect topaz. After that I started
using up my cash gambling on long battle bows, the most recent of
which is 4-23 damage, 21 poison over 4 seconds, and 5% mana steal.
Very useful. I also gambled another LBB that does over 30 max
damage, but that one doesn't have any mana steal, so it's not that
useful for me at the moment since I don't have any mana steal from
other items yet.

The level of Critical Strike could have a bearing as well, since its
percentage increase has been ramped up.

Darn, I wish I'd been in that game, I still think the message I would
see should read "Danzaelle was killed by WTF" ;-)
>The level of Critical Strike could have a bearing as well, since its

Yeah, rather dramatically ;-) At level 6 with items (I usually push it
to level 7 to get 49%) it's at 72%, although it's already at the point
of diminishing returns, since the next level only adds another 2%.

Following a later death where one spark from an LEB killed her as
well, I chickened out and put the next four level ups worth of stat
points in Vitality.

Hmm, I hope I remember to listen to my self when I tell myself *not*
to kill the King until this is resolved ;-) Shouldn't be much longer,
I found both the entrance to the Hall of Anguish (where she is now)
and the exit to the Summit before I finally found the waypoint this
morning, so it's directly off to the Ancients once I see what's in the
Drifter Canyon and the Icy Cellar ;-)
>Following a later death where one spark from an LEB killed her as

A wise decision, I'm sure ;-) I, of course, would have 25 points in it
at that stage, but you know how sold I am on that 1 point per level
thing ;-)
funnily, I got killed by the maggot king's poison the other night. Slew him
and ran out of the room. I watched as the points dropped down,
unfortunately they didn't stop at 1! I figured that I must not have run to
where I thought I was so asked another player to stand on my corpse - it was
exactly where I thought it was and outside of the room. So it must have
been death by poison.
Yes, poison can know kill you..... unless you run to town, where it will
stop at 1.

That's odd. Last night I took my new sorc out for a spin and finished
the maggot lair, and naturally got poisoned all to hell. I let my
health completely drain and tried keeping the merc alive instead. Yet
I didn't die, and the poison eventually wore off.

indeed, after being poisoned by whatshisface the poisoner in baal's lag
squad (the boss reviver in the 2nd group), my bowazon routinely hangs
back near the entrance with 1 life waiting for the poison to wear off
and Bartoc's group so she can guided-leech back to full.

No, I had to use the cube, but I haven't checked since then. I had
the same experience as Stephen with the greyed out WP. I *think* I
killed the King, so when I go back I'll check to see if the WP works.
Some of it drops. You can find everything up to the Brain or Quill
and can make Flags, but since you don't have Elixers you can't make
the Herbs. Some recipes use those items, but not many and not very
useful ones.

Right. 75% from charms +10% from scroll I finally read -40% for NM =
45%, unless the changed the NM penalty.

I've just put one point in Strafe, so it's at level 4 with items. GA
is maxed and MS has 3-4 natural points in it. I use them all at
various times.
Randy
Well, I got that bow in Act 1 NM. It's pretty wimpy for a level 57
Bowazon. It's the exceptional version of the Long Bow, IIRC.

I may still have that with 1 point (plus 3) now. It's pretty high at
that level any way.

I just did the Cow Level (game's still running ATM), and had the same
problem. I'm currently in the Act 5 Cow level but, as I expected,
going there isn't affecting whether the WP to the Act 1 one is open in
any way :-( I finally *did* kill the King out of frustration, nothing
of any interest (other than a ton of regular gems) dropped except the
Cow King's boots.
Since the original Sis *can* access the WP, one way or another I
should be able to get it for you or Stephen, if you're interested. I
really didn't see a reason to be going back to that one, though (see
comment below).

You had those dropping in the Act 1 Cow level? I only saw the parts in
the Act 5 one. What does the Flag do? I'm gonna have to try to
remember to save at least one of each part so that I can make a few of
those (have at least 4 quills so far). And you're assuming that the
Elixer is something that will drop in NM or Hell? It *can't* be the
Elixer of life, since there are recipes that call for 4 of them ;-)

My little rogue, errr, bowazon hasn't had much luck finding Ral, Ort,
Tal or Thul runes yet (and couldn't find *any* camels in the Far Oasis
even after a half dozen or more runs), so she doesn't have any of
those skill-, life- or resistance-boosting charms yet. She was,
however, lucky enough to find an Ohm rune, which she cubed to get
herself one of those handy dandy +50% enhanced damage charms. It's
very useful alongside her new 6-30 long battle bow (she was able to
upgrade from the lesser damage with mana stealing bow after she found
a mana steal amulet) and her level 6-8 GA/Strafe. Right now she's
doing 'Szark runs' to see if she can get herself an even better bow or
some more runes.

About that. ;)
I started a game right after posting and right away upgraded her bow
when Charsi offered up and exceptional bow with +197% ED that put it
around 26-65 damage. I was feeling very good about that and headed
down the Crypt. I managed to get to the first WP before I decided I
needed a break from the hard stuff, so I continued questing.
When I found The Smith he droped a rare Hydra bow. It was another
nice upgrade with around 105 max damage, but I never used it. A quick
check of the Stash and the cube recipies and I found that I had the
ingredients for the rare-to-unique transform. I was quite surprised
to get a hydra bow in Act 1 NM. I had figured on buying a Hydra bow
in Act 5 Hell and upgrading it to rare and then to unique, so this was
considerably early. Now if I could upgrade some of her other gear.
So far it seems to be working well and my Zon has just arrived at the
AS in Act 2 at level 66. I finished the Crypt but I never found Moe.

I saw ald on line so I ICQ'd him right after I found it. I figured he

Other than the aforementioned second Act 5 Cow level run (which netted
4 Flags, now taking up a lot of space in the cube until I can get 6
elixirs to upgrade them to Herbs), I've pretty much avoided doing
runs. Being level 42 when I left Act 1 (although I ended up Act 5,
before the second Cow level run, at the same level 56 that Randy
finished it at), the idea was definitely to get through to areas where
I was going to get experience points. From Act 2 - Act 4, she only got
two levels, one from the Champion Diablo (and halfway to the next
level from the Fanatic one), and one from the real Diablo. The
experience points started rolling in again once she got to the
underground areas in Act 5, even the Bloody Foothills was netting her
next to nothing :-(
Now she's back to getting no experience again. She started NM last
night, with me falling asleep just after she killed Corpsefire (his
drops sure were disappointing compared to what they were in Normal ;-)
), and took out BloodRaven before I left for work this morning. She
started working on the Crypt, but decided that she *really* wanted to
rescue Cain and stop paying for ID scrolls before going through there
again, so tonight she'll set off on that quest. Probably end up doing
the Crypt before leaving Act 1 again, I'd hate to end up in the
situation Randy did where it didn't seem worth it to do it (as opposed
to Acts 2-4 not being worth it, but hey, you *have* to do those ;-) ).

The Szark runs didn't net much, so now she's doing Stormtree runs
instead (the Lower Kurast waypoint on my map is right next to the
entrance to the Flayer Jungle, so it's a quick trip). So far he's
dropped a bunch of rares and set items which immediately became sell
fodder, but he also dropped a Lum rune which was used to assemble the
now-standard 'Smoke' chainmail armour. In just three more level ups,
the resistances problem she's having will therefore go away.

I paid him a visit just an hour or so ago. Things were looking
pretty grim with just one Diablo breathing down my neck, but when a
second one appeared out of a side passage, I bailed like a big
chicken.

My assassin hit somewhat of a wall once she entered the underground
areas of act 2/NM, so the bowazon is getting a good run instead.

Thank you. Yes, I really didn't need quite the power of a Windforce
for NM, but I wasn't going to keep it in the stash until I hit Act 5
Hell. ;)
As I told you on ICQ I also found a Kuko Shakaku that I've been
hauling around, thinking you or ald may want it. Now I just need to
find a time when one of you is on line when I am.

I guess so. I searched all three of the cave levels completely and
never found him. Maybe I'll go back or just wait to try again in
Hell. I did kill Andy and Natalya.
So far Felina-AR has made it to Lower Kurast in NM at level 68. I
managed to kill one of the Diablos in the new Swampy Pit. I was going
to kill another one, but after finding two more I decided that one was
enough. It took several hundred arrows with Windforce to take him
down and I didn't want to bother doing it 3+ more times. The GA trick
still works, but it's harder to find a sweet spot and he doesn't stay
there long. I forget if I was at players 2 or players 4 at the time.
I've been doing more players 4 since I found the bow, but Felina is
still not leveling very much in this area.
I found three groups of camels in one run in NM but the best rune I
got off of them was Eld. Gems are easy enough to come by I quit
picking up anything besides Flawless and I may stop getting all of
them. Unfortunately, Ral, Ort and Tal are a bit scarce now. I had
cubed several of them into higher runes before I realized half the
recipies required them. :(
Szark dropped an Ohm for me in NM the one time I killed him. I
haven't used it, but that charm looks inviting and would go a long way
with the Windforce (as if I needed more firepower).
I've upped her Strafe to around 10 and used it quite a bit in the
jungle areas. I also managed to replace her 4% mana steal ammy since
the bow has 6% on it. I'm using a Cats Eye now that I made with the
three rare ammys, one rare jewel and a perfect skull recipie. I've
made a few unique rings and ammy's so far but I haven't managed to
come up with a Mara's or Bul Taco yet.

I spent quite some time cubing all that stuff and made 3-4 Flags, then
dumped them for space since I couldn't use them yet and figured I
could come back and get them later. That's the cubing session where I
lost the Tal Rasha's mask and a Peasant Crown, along with a few other
nice items.

I did the same, rescuing Cain and then doing the Crypt. Don't expect
to gain 20 levels in the Crypt this time. ;) You don't *have* to do
Act 4 any more, but there are some things there you may not want to
miss.
I'm saving my elixer of life from NM to cube one of those charms, but
I don't have the ingredients yet. I skipped Radament in NM because
I'm alread carrying the Normal scroll around waiting for five Zods to
make a cube for that recipie. No point in carrying around 2-3 of them
for 30 more levels until the zods come along.

There's your problem, he's in Jail Level 1, IIRC ;-)

Never tried the Smoke Armor, but once you get to Act 5 and rescue
Anya, your resistance problems go away anyway ;-) Word of warning,
though: Do *not* kill Nilithak before you get Malah to give you the
necessary 4 scrolls. She eventually *did* give me the last two (when
starting new games), but it took a *lot* longer than it would have if
I'd waited a little while longer to off Nilithak ;-)
>There's your problem, he's in Jail Level 1, IIRC ;-)
There was no sign of him in Jail level 1 or 3 today. Perhaps he only
appears on certain days of the week?

I noticed Malah keeps doling out scrolls, but I figured that was a bug
caused by the mod tinkering with recipes and tricking the quest system
(you haven't completed the quest but don't have the scroll, so you get
one since the game figures you haven't used it yet) so decided to only
ever take one scroll per difficulty per character.

No, my problem is not paying attention to what I'm typing. I *was*
searching the Jail levels, not the cave levels. That must have been a
D1 flashback. ;)

I did a check of the AR site and found something that said he
"randomly" appears on Jail levels 1-3. I don't know if the "random"
part applies to the appearing or the level he appears on.
I also found this reported on the AR site forum. The mod creator
agreed it was a bug but he was too lazy to fix it. Now, do ald and I
take advantage of the bug or toss two of our charms. Getting rid of
the 10% for reading one will be a bit trickier. Of course we could
toss all three charms. I'm inclined to take advantage of the bug for
now and pretend I got my last two scrolls early.
Along the same lines, I spent last night killing Natalya in NM and
gathering set pieces. By the time I had the complete set I was only
one piece away from a second set, so I went for another. I now have
two of the crafted armors with +3 all skills, 16% dual leach and 50%
resist all. The second one had a bit extra resist for 80% fire and
71% poison resist. My Zon and Barb Merc look very stylish wearing
matching armor. Getting the second set left me two pairs of boots
away from having two more complete sets. If one of you need some
parts I will hang on to them a bit, otherwise I will either sell them
or get the boots and make two more to see if the random mods get
better.
The effort wasn't totally wasted on getting the armor. I also found a
Bul Kathos' Wedding Band (3% only) and got 2-3 level ups in the
process. The armor is nice for a Bowazon, but I'm not sure a melee
character would appreciate it. The repair cost is more than 50K per
durability point. :(

Dang, I need to get myself a few pairs of those. Do they have a very
high level requirement?
Truth is, I never looked since the Zon was level 70 when I made them.
It is Loricated Mail which is elite, and most elite items have had
their level requirements lowered to lvl 50 (about the time you finish
Normal) so I suspect that is the requirement here. The Windforce has
level 50 required, and I doubt this armor is any higher.
The kicker is the 149 strength required. My Zon currently has +20 to
strength from items, so I had to raise strength to 130 to wear it. It
wasn't that many more points since I had already pumped strength for
the Windforce. But she now is running with 22% mana leach and 29%
life leach, so who needs vitality anyway?
Huh? Mine has a lvl 73 req on it.

Thundergod's belt and a mara's ammy go a long way towards that STR.

Yep, mods are fun.
Danzaelle is doing pretty good in the leech department right now,
although nothing as extreme as your setup. The Wilhelm's Pride (I
think that's the name) set belt provides the base leeching, with
secondary mana leeching from her amulet, plus additional life leech
from the Cathan's Seal set ring. Things are certainly safer with 11%
life leech than with no life leech, that's for sure.
She's now even safer thanks to the new knockback bow. After going
through acts 3 and 4 using the long battle bow she gambled in act 2,
in early act 5 a three socket reflex bow dropped, into which she
stuffed a Nef rune for the knockback, an Ith rune for some extra
physical damage, plus a perfect topaz for some lightning damage (she
already had lightning damage from a couple of charms). It's no
Windforce-esque setup, obviously, but it will get her through the rest
of Normal difficulty and early Nightmare. She'll need an upgrade
after that though, or at least some of those nice crafted
uber-elemental grand charms...

From what I'm hearing, it must mean randomly appears, like the Camels.
