For Descent and Descent2, what's the best joystick in the $80-85 range?
My old Gravis joystick is about 6 years old, and hardly works any more.

Good topic for open discussion! I can tell you what NOT to buy! :o)

I purchased a Wingman Extreme last December, it lasted 2 months before
the "hat" broke. The manufacturer sent me a new one, this one lasted
about 6 months before the "hat" broke. I repaired it myself and it
worked for about two more weeks when 2 of the buttons stopped working. I
sent that one back for replacement. In the mean time I went and
purchased another one. This one lasted 2 days before the trigger button
stopped working. Got my money back and went and bought another one
(you'd think I learned my lesson by now!). This one lasted about 1 week
and the trigger button just broke today (sigh).
So, I guess I have to start considering a different brand. Any
suggestions people???

Get the MS Sidewinder 3d pro! it has a hat that works, and a neat twist
x2 axis for banking. It doesn't break. either!

I have found that the Sidewinder 3dPro is one of the best. I finally
figured out how to shoot strafe and be able to use the 3rd axis all at
the same time. If you can get that kind of setup going then it makes
movement an order of magnitude easier. Mine was 55 dollars. Hope that
is a good price for you .

I live in California near the Logitech factory. I go the their outlet store
every once in a while and they have TONS of refurbished Wingman Extremes for
about $15. As I've owned two brand new ones and a refurbished one, let me tell
you, they break all the time. I guess that's why they have so many at the
outlet, eh? :-)

As for the MS Sidewinder 3D Pro...love it! Although mine DID break (after 9
months of moderate use). It is extremely smooth and has great feel, especially
at the limits of movement. The only problem I have is, I cannot get the twisty
function to work again. I want to assigned it to bank left and right but
whenever I try to assign it, X2 automatically pops into the box but I want Y2!
This is driving me nuts because the first time I tried it, it worked but I
can't seem to do it again. I can assigned Y2 to other actions but not
banking...can anyone help?

BTW, I've also tried out the FCS Thrustmaster Mach II. The sticks feels great
in the hand BUT the base is light as a feather! You gotta either tape it down
or hold onto it with the other hand...yuk! And, it has a real murky feeling at
the end of it's limits. It's like you never really know if your pointing the
stick all the way in any particular direction. Try it, you'll see what I mean.

I think you're getting the axes confused. X2 is the twist axis. Y2 is
the throttle axis. Remember: Y = up/down, X = left/right (more or
less). Don't tell me you're trying to bank with the throttle?!

BTW, I agree with you that the SW Pro is a great stick! :)

Yes, it is a great stick, but has anyone configured it with Descent II
so that you could press 2 buttons at the same time? I currently cannot.

Please help me on this.

The SW Pro (in DOS mode at least) has several limitations due to the
joysticks with which it is forced to be compatible. To wit:

In CH Flightstick Pro mode (switch position 1), you get all buttons and
axes, but can only have one button/hat direction pressed at a time.

In Thrustmaster mode (switch position 2), you can press multiple buttons
at once, but the throttle lever doesn't work.

I think the SW Pro's Win95 drivers solve this problem, but I'm not 100%
certain. In any case, the "manual" sheet that comes with the SW Pro
clearly shows how to change the joystick's modes.

No way....Thrustmaster FCS Mark II....best joystick I'd ever used. I
love the CH FlightStick Pro but you can't use the hat and fire at the
same time with it.

Yep. I have to second this one. It's even better when you
pipe it through the WCS Mk.II. Made though the first one with the FCS
and nary a problem.

There are a lot of good sticks in that range, I personally use a MS 3D
PRO. If I was looking for something new (I want it for Christmas) I
would seriously look at the Spacetec Orb 360. I think it will be the
stick of the future. A lot of people (especially Descent II players)
don't like it because it has a definite speed advantage. Turning is
faster than you've ever experienced (I tried a friends). I think the
reason for the major speed advantage is 1. It doesn't plug into a game
port, it is a true serial device thus you need a com port. 2. It is
totally digital and optical.

I would have to agree about the Spacetec Orb 360. It is by far the best
joy stick I have ever seen. This joystick can make moves that are simply
impossible to do in 3D games without the use of 15 fingers. I bought it
myself and this seems to be the future joystick of choice. The cost is
about $100 bucks but I'm sure the price will go doownn soon, if your
willing to wait.
