sound but no effects

I can not get my sound effects to play even though the music plays. when
I do a sound effects test in setup, the status bar goes all the way
across with no errors so it looks as though the effects work, but no
effects. I have a sound blaster pro compatible multi-media card and have
had no other problems with any other games. can someone please help me,
I could get along without the music but the effects are essencial!
