I downloaded Daggerfall when it was being given away by Bethesda and
ran it successfully in DosBox quite a few times. I have now gotten
the urge to play it again, but I can't get it to run. I successfully
mount my Dosgames folder and change directories to DFCD, but then I
can't get the game to start. I thought that the directions for
running the Daggerfall download in DosBox were in the Read.Me, like
they are for the Arena download, but they aren't. Can anyone help me?

Have you changed the path and pathcd values in z.cfg?

That was always the killer for me (well... as far as getting it to
start successfully went, anyway).

Thank you for your suggestion, but the download version of Daggerfall
does not have a z.cfg file. This is not a mistake because the
download version of Arena does not have a similar file and it works
just fine. I have no trouble playing Daggerfall from the disk, but I
wanted to play the download version because it is much more stable.

Much more stable?

Thanks for the tip. I'll certainly try to remember that.

The download version that I got is no longer available and I think the
reason that I am unable to play it any more is that it was time
sensitive. I decided to look on the Bethesda Forums for help and
followed the link to download Daggerfall and got the version that
creates its own DOS window, but requires the disk. Looking at the
files in that version and the files that now exist in the version I
downloaded first, it looks like my first version has reverted to one
that requires the Daggerfall disk. Oh, well.

Thanks for that. I think I have the download version somewhere, but
have never installed it. And I was struggling a bit to think that
they'd cleaned up the code. Given that they seem to have continued
their proud(?) tradition of quality control with Skyrim.
