The best sword to have depends on whether you prefer to use a shield or not. If
you prefer a shield, the best sword is a katana. If you prefer two handed
weapons, the best sword is a dai-katana.
As to where to obtain these weapons, unlike many other games, including Arena,
treasure in Daggerfall is randomly generated. Therefore it is not possible to
know exactly where you should go to get such and such a sword. The best spot to
look for high grade weapons early in the game is probably the mages guilds,
once you are of high enough rank (conjuror) to purchase magic items.
Short of this, for some reason good weapons usually show up for sale in stores
before they appear as treasure in dungeons. The best store in the game is
probably the Odd Blades in the city of Daggerfall. Treasure is related to luck
and level of the character, and you will see higher quality materials as you
progress in level.

Aah! We need a spreadsheet over what Mages Guild sells what! :)
Too bad that part of the inventory is randomly generated on
installation, while some core products remain constants. This
makes it a nearly hopeless task, unless someone gets way too
much time on her hands! :)

Wendy B used to have a list of the items that seemed to show up in mages guilds
relatively predictably. Since I don't use magic items anymore I didn't keep
this info, but if anybody has this stuff I would put it on the FAQ.

Now who might you be referring to, I wonder? Actually, I was going to add
some edited highlights of goodies found in mages guilds in the province
pages. I could list them just as easily in a spreadsheet page if anyone
wants it! 'Course I'll need input first.....

Actually, I think there is some sort of artifact you can get from a
quest through a Knights guild of some sort. I think that is the best
weapon in the game, though I don't really know. I have yet to obtain
any artifacts (lacking the patience to actually get to a high enough
rank to summon daedra or get artifact knights quests).
Would anybody with better knowledge like to confirm or deny what I
have written?

This was the consensus the group reached the last time this came up. In my
experience, you can get some pretty good stuff just by visiting the mages
guilds in the capital cities (e.g. Daggerfall, Ykalon, Sentinel, etc.)

If you want magical weapons, you can custom make ones that are better than most
if not all of the weapon artifacts. Item makers are available to members of the
mages guild or temple of Julianos.

Have you tried going to a coven? They have summoning available. I don't
know if there is a rank system in covens as I was able to summon
straight away (well once I'd built up the cash needed...)
Elberon
Since you cannot join a coven, ranks in the guild do not apply. They will
summon for anyone (providing he has enough gold). Rates are from 100,000 to
200,000 gp depending on one's reputation with the coven.
The biggest problem with summoning in covens is that the daedra appearing (if
any) is chosen at random, so if you want a specific artifact you may have
problems getting it.

I'm not fussy as to what artifact I get - I think they're all quite neat. They
tell you who will be summoned in advance and you can say 'no' to summoning then
fast travel a bit to get a new one.

> Whats the best sword to get and where do you get it?
The best non-magical sword in terms of damage is a daedric dai-katana.
If you're an extremely high level you might find one, but the quickest
way to get one is via the rusty orge 'cheat'. It makes the game very
unbalanced to use it so I won't describe it here, either email me, or
post the NG and you'll get lots replies as to how it works.
My favourite bought weapon so far is a mithril katana of vamparic touch
bought from the mages guild at lvl 6. My favourite 'cheat' weapon is a
daedric dai-katana of vamparic touch that strengthens armour as well -
these effects don't need soul-binding or disadvantages and aren't
stupidly over enchanted, but it's great for the really awequad
situations.
Very true. I just picked up a Daedric Cuirass of the Orc Lord at the Mages
Guild in Wayrest for a paltry couple of grand! At 9th level I'm only just
getting mithril and a bit of adamantium in treasure and the normal shops.

You don't happen to remember what town that Guild was in?
Mir? I though Mir's systems were so outdated that they couldn't run
Pong...

How do you define "like"?

Voyager, yes. Rest, no.

You're good at guessing, I guess.
I have my AD&D dice set on my living-room table. (But I'm not a
violent demon-worshipping kid.)
Never saw Star Trek, though.
I think TV is evil. Worse than Dungeons & Dragons.
And cinema is evil too, unless you go there with a nice girl.

I *think* it was your very own Grayidge, otherwise it was a random town in
daggerfall as I'd been going round all the little towns with mages guilds
seeing what there was.

I don't like Star Trek or sci-fi stuff. I have only just started playing AD&D
for the first time to try it out (albeit a campaign that's been running for over
8 years - see what I meant about being the runt of the party...)
What do you mean about 'die-hards of a mere game'? Maybe you think that we're
more interested in a game than in real life. I can only speak for myself, but
for me fantasy is about getting away from real life and 'living' in a world
that's exciting, challenging and different. And because it's not real there's no
possiblilty of harm to yourself or others - this instantly makes fantasy more
attractive than real life, but all of us do have real lives, some of which
aren't that pleasant. Some people are working, some at school, some at
university, some unemployed and so on. All have their own reasons for real life
not being very enjoyable. Time spent emersing yourself in another world can help
you cope with real life that bit better in the same way a holiday can help you
cope with work etc.
Wherever there is a fantasy world there will also be discussion about it - like
historians discussing and recreating life from a different era.
However for me I'm not avoiding the real world, and I'm not more interested in a
game than real life, I just think of it like an exciting adventure holiday.
Elberon
first off, daggerfall is no mere game.
that being said, i do not like dungeons and dragons, nor do i like star
trek. i only know about a few things star trek because it is a cultural
phenomenon and one must know at least a little about it in order understand
many cultural references.
i'm a big fan of all things cyberpunk, and then of course, i like beer.

"Just say 'no' to Daedra Summoning."

Hmm. In my games, the vampiric steel katana stays steel, whereas the
vampiric dagger advances in levels very fast.
I wish I could find that sheet that detailed everything for you, it
made it quite simple (if time consuming) to get everything. Anyways,
try searching for the calander if you are interested.
But gotta go to work, I'll try better later!
