I guess the question is should I finish this mission? I have saved

is that bad? If I never take it, what happens?

Mike,
If the bow will work, just shoot the <shampoo :-) > VA thru the wall. Turn
up the volume so you can hear whether or not the arrow hits the mark; and
just shoot and shoot and shoot. With some luck, you'll kill him and not
even have to come close!
BTW, if you can't kill him with your mithril bow, go to the Rusty Orge in
the Province of Daggerfall, and do the "upstair chests cheat", and you
should find a deadric bow in no time at all!
Good luck!

<Snip problem: Vampire Ancient in the way!>
I would recommend *never* leaving home without a potion of resist
shock (or the spell, if you are skilled enough to cast it). Vampire
Ancients aren't too tough... *if* you have that potion. (With a spell
reflector up, the Vamp will die quickly).
As for now, I think the best you can do is hope to draw the VA into
the open, run past him, get into the room, and hope you can get out
without getting shocked too much. Evasion is always an option, but
none are more difficult to evade than a VA.

From what I understand, if you fail this quest, you do get a second
chance at the information the Blades provide you with as a result,
though you'll have to look for it a bit (just take a trip to Castle
Wayrest). So if you really can't do it, don't panic. Just continue on.

Vampire Ancients are one of the big guns the game throws at you, along with
Ancient Liches and Daedra Lords.
They use a 'shock' attack that is very fast and does a lot of damage, they
get about three of the shock attacks before running out of mana, then they
resort to melee attacks, which are quite bad in themselves.
So, you have some options: if you have an item that makes you immune to
spells for awhile, even a short while, you can cast it then rush the vampire
and he'll use up his shock really quick. Then you can melee him, if you got
a daedric weapon you can probably take him unless you are a weak or slow or
both.
You can also of course learn a spell if you have enough mana.
Also I have heard that a simple light spell can actually kill a vampire but
I've never had any success with it.
Phah! My high elf killed a VA at 2nd level with an ebony dagger without
werebeast or vampire abilities, just plain old fear and surprise, the two
main weapons of the inquisition. Oh yeah, my ebony dagger too. Three main
weapons.

I am an old fan DF, and have recently started playing it all over again. It
is funny that when I first played the game I don't remember finding so many
resources as I found since getting that itch to play a favorite again. The
point is that since I started reading this newsgroup (all of three weeks
ago!) I have learned alot here and other places, but I have never of the
cheat you mention or anywhere else. What is it?

What is that cheat? I have never heard of it. Thank alot!

BTW, to the people who run this newsgroup: Thank You!
I have found and read more about DF in the past month through all of you
(and other sources) when I got that itch to play again than I did when the
game first came out.
Thanks alot!
Vampire characters are imbalanced. See, it's easy.
Cool, cool

There's your problem. Unless you are running a virtual juggernaut character,
this quest is more suitable for someone of maybe tenth level. Try to restore a
save and pick up a level or two before tackling the vampire. If there's no time
for this, you could try fashioning a magic item specifically designed for
vampire ancients. Don't forget to include resist shock.
> I am using a Daedric claymore to
> smite enemies mightily
Nice weapon. The problem is that VAs do so much damage with their shock spell
that you have to be able to weather that just to get in more than a shot or
two.

Can't complete the main story line without doing this quest.

In some tavern villages called ending in "Lodge", and most notably the
Rusty Ogre Lodge in the western part of Daggerfall, there is one
central tavern. Its whole upstairs etage is one big room with beds
and chests. Save there, reload (some may have to exit and restart the
game, rumors say) and you can steal Daedric weapons and holy daggers
from many of those chests. You may save and reload again until you
cannot carry any more. Then save, reload and press Alt-F11, and you
have teleported to the exit door. Run for your life before the guards
can touch you.
Of course, this can seriously simplify the game, so you may think
twice before doing it. :)

Knowing Guilds, they probably yell at you and get revenge on
you by "Hating" you.

I never faced one, but I'm assuming you have the same options you always
have... Beat them into bloody pulps, or run like a screaming baby.

When entering the tavern, stop and take notice which direction you need to
face to click on the exit door. Then, when you're finished doing the loot -
save - reload thing, just before the final save, turn in that direction.
Then, when reloading and pressing Alt-F11, you'll be facing the exit door,
and all you have to do is click on the door, and you're home free!

Magnus is right. When I start a game, after leaving the Privateer's Hold, I
head for Gothway Gardens, and buy a wagon and horse. Then I head straight
for Rusty Orge Lodge, and stock up on my "tools of the trade". From then
on, I don't have to worry about money!

Bwahahaha! ROTFLMAO! Yeah, right... *three* attacks? You have yet to
master the art of evasion (with which you can finish one off before
he's gotten off all of his attacks). If you do this, you'll note that
they get quite a bit more than three shock attacks before running out.
Three attacks... <snicker> ;)
>BTW, to the people who run this newsgroup: Thank You!
Someone runs this newsgroup? Who does that?
Nope, nobody "runs" the newsgroup, we're all just a bunch of fans who
read and post here, just like you. Some of us (such as George4 and
Magnus) just have been around slightly longer than others.
Someday, you, too, shall be one who is mistaken for one who "runs the
group." That's assuming my dream of a
comp.sys.ibm.games.rpg.elder-scrolls.* isn't implemented with the
appearance of Morrowind. Then you'd be mistaken for one who "runs" a
big 8 group! :)

The first time I met a deadra lord I was severely diasppointed. I beat up the
Ancient vamps and liches in Scoutg Barrow on my first trip there. And that was
without daedra armor and the super-sword.
Of course, I was a paladin in the Knights of the Dragon and the second to last
rank in the Temple of Stendarr at the time, so I had practice.

Jania the High Elf has had good luck after firing off a simple light spell:
a lock was picked successfully (in that room at the top of a very long shaft
with the grate at the top) that otherwise did not open. Another time a flock
of Ancient Vampires froze after she used this spell.
I thought at the time there was a connection but then again strange and
funny things happen all the time in this game.
