Also, I am starting the game a-new with the Mage class but I cant even get
out of the damn dungeon my character is so weak. Please if anyone knows
which race is the best to be a mage and if anyone has some tips on how to
be a mage I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Main Plot line quests are triggered by two things... your current
progress in the quest, and your character's level. Your next step would be
to attain level 5 (if you aren't already) and then talk to Cyndassa, the
royal maid or what not in Castle Daggerfall.
Sometimes you will be notified of quests by courier, other times you have to
talk to one of the main players... If you ever feel you're stuck, just try
talking to the different members of the royal families of Daggerfall,
Sentinel, and Wayrest. One of four things will happen.
1. they will "ignore" you meaning they aren't ready to offer their part of
the main story yet...
2. they will just enter a standard conversation...
3. they will need your help with a generic quest of no particular
importance.
4. they will send you on one of the main quests.
Make sure you have spoken to ALL of them before you get frustrated. Some of
them are in rooms that are adjoining the throne rooms. Such as Myseniera
and Cyndassa in Daggerfall.
If none of this works, just play the game out and gain some levels and
equipment. The main quests will usually find their way into your
character's path.
Oh and check your backpack from time to time. Sometimes the game puts
courier notes into your inventory and fails to notify you.
And on the Mage class. I have never personally tried the pure mage class.
I'm more of a sword and armor with a little magic thrown in type of guy.
But I can tell you what I know. With no armor skills and a very limited
spellbook at the beginning, the Mage is an extremely fragile character at
the start. You need to start casting the few spells you have to defeat the
creatures in the dungeon (shock and heal in particular)... and save OFTEN.
I would recommend getting your butt out of the Privateer's hold dungeon as
fast as possible and hightailing it to the Mages Guild. With their help you
will become an extremely powerful character indeed.
I would also recommend being a High Elf. The High Elf is stong and
intelligent (important for magery), with the added bonus of being immune to
paralyzation... which at later levels is a really nice bonus to have
because the creatures start casting nasty spells at you, and paralyzation is
one of their favorites.
If you'd like to know the quickest route out of the starting dungeon
(Privateer's Hold), I can post that as well.
When you finally get to the mages guild (in daggerfall, daggerfall), join it
and get to know the spellmaker (you access it through a woman in one of the
back rooms past the blacksmith guy). The spellmaker can be used to custom
create extremely powerful spells once you have gotten the hang of the
controls and workings of Daggerfall. But as a beginner, you can use it to
create extremely low chance / low spell point spells that you use to
increase your skills quickly. For instance, create a spell that has the
effects "heals fatigue", "open", and "slow falling", all with the lowest
magnitude and duration. In practical use, this spell will do almost nothing
for you- but you can rent a room at the inn and spend several game days just
repeatedly casting it and every time you rest to gain your spell points back
you will probably have improved in the schools of magic assotated with the
spell. (in this case it would be Restoration, Mysticism, and Alteration).
With a little patience you can increase your magic skills 20-30% in a short
period of time. Toy with the spell maker and you'll be able to make some
training spells of your own, for the other three schools of magic :)
I hope this info helps you out!
Quickest route out of Ps hold is to go left from the big stairs and
enter the secret door. Go straight and up the stairs and the to the
left. After just enter the forst door to the left, this should be the
exit room. Taking the quickest route you should fight only 3 rats 5 bats
and one imp.

Won't the guards attack him if he tries to enter one of the siderooms? I've been
patiently waiting for the queens permission to enter the rest of the castle but
it never happened. Should the player really be forced to kill a few of the royal
guards just to explore the rest of the castle?

I find it quicker to run up the stairs and climb the wall next to the throne
before the skeleton can maneuver around the throne and then you're right
next to the exit.
You'll have to fight like 3 rats, 3 bats and an imp... but sometimes you
luck out and can run through the exit room without having to fight.
I then save my game outside the dungeon and then sleep outside for a while
and kill a couple theives and bards... taking their armor and weapons.

Bethsoft wanted you to get used to killing...

Oh, dear, if you wait for permission to explore, you'll never finish the game!
Some folks on this newsgroup have reported fighting guards when entering (or
emerging from) the side chambers off the Daggerfall throne room to visit
Cyndassa and Mynisera. Others have suggested casting Invisibility on yourself
to avoid pursuit. Another strategy might be casting Recall *outside* the
palace so you can make a quick exit. Personally, I've had no trouble chatting
with either lady, and waltzed out unmolested without ever casting a spell or
wielding a weapon.

Yes. This worried me the first time through, but eventually I gathered that the
game could not be completed without doing so. It does not seem to affect your
standing either with the law or the King and Queen to kill guards if they
attack you.

Don't hold your breath.

I don't know if you *should* be put in this position or not, but this is the
position in which you find yourself if you wish to complete the main story
line.
Cool, cool

I found running worked pretty well. When I talked to Cyndissa (?? I
can't remember her name!) the guards couldn't have cared less. But
when I talked to Mynisera, they came after me. The first time I
killed a couple and moved out without stopping to check the bodies.
The second time I saved right before I left, managed to get killed by
the guards (sheesh), and ran outta there when I restored from the
save.
It might make a difference that my running skill is around 50% or so.
I was grateful they didn't try to follow me into the foyer area, at
least.

I use to kill the archer, by running towards the table, striking a
couple of times, retreating, repeat until archer is dead. I then
go to the room with big stairs. Kill the bat, usually, then go to
the left side of the big stairs and start going up. The skeleton
comes down towards me. I back down. When I am on or near the floor,
I slide to the left and run up the stairs! The skeleton forgets me
completely. I can now take the chair elevator up. The right corridor
presents me with a rat, then I save before entering the room with the
exit. Imps are bad, but there is always some chance to resist a spell
(depending on race and attributes). Saving after each resisted spell,
the imp needs to recharge after a couple of spells. That's the end
of it.
Even the Linguist had no trouble with rats and bats, with ebony
dagger. A pacifist will have a serious challenge, though.
