Okay, I guess I am slow but I just figured out how to take advantage of all the
things you can inject from the science kit (C2) for your norns but here's my
problem: when I open the science kit I go first to the page where all of the
body functions are listed. Next to each there is a small red beating heart and
a number as a percentage and then a bar which is usually full of green color.
Follow me so far? Well when I look at this chart for one of my norns, where it
says Body the percentage listed there is 0% (with a black X by it) and there is
no green bar. As a matter of fact, there is almost no green bars for any of
his body functions and yet he is walking and talking as usual!!! He's only
about 2 1/2 hours old so I don't think his "time is up" so why am I getting
readings like this on him????

Also, does everyone seem to always resort to injections just to keep their
norns fed??? There is food in abundance everywhere - and they know what it is-
but they won't eat it!!!!!!! Drives me nuts! I even typed to them once "you
are all retarded!" and they just walked away. Any suggestions would be greatly
appreciated.

I need to go back to Pac-Man - more my speed :)

Hiya,
The 0% and cross by the organ means that that organ is now dead. It's not
performing any functions for the norn. Since they have a few organs that are
not vital in the short term, or duplicated, they can often survive like this
for some time. The low amount of green in the bars mean these organs are not
at their best, but stable and operating. Sudden drops in organ healthiness
are caused by fainting (stars around the head). When a norn faints,
resusitate them before you do anything else with metabolism transplant,
followed by defibrillant.
As for them being retarded, well, basically they are :-). Try getting the
new genome update from cyberlife's webpages, or getting some of my more
intelligent norns from my webpage (address in signature below). There's two
types: the amnesia norns, often just referred to as "Lis' new norns" on this
newsgroup, and the canny norns. The canny norns are the most intelligent,
with extra brain lobes and new abilities to search for food and reason, but
the amnesia norns are much better breeders with normal cyberlife norns- the
cannys are so genetically different they can have really stupid offspring
when bred with normal norns. In fact, the gen files for norns included with
the genetics kit, include the same behavioural alterations as the amnesia
norns <g> Cyberlife and I did a deal, after I explained the reasoning behind
them :-).
Btw, is anyone interested in an explanation of the research behind the
amnesia norns? I know that the genetics experts among you have probably
looked at the drive reactions, and thought 'What!? That's nuts!'.

But the organ that has the 0% by it is the BODY!!!! How can he still be up and
moving???
Also, since I know you are an expert at these things, what do you suggest as
the most important "chemicals" or things to watch for and inject into your
norns? It seems they are always low on glucose, and always low on water (
according to the graph I attempted to set up). And how can I get them to eat
without having to inject liquid food all the time - it's like they are junkie
norns - they are gonna be full of track marks! LOL
And btw, I do have all the update packs from CL and I am working with Canny
norns - maybe a bit smarter - but so far, not much.

Thanks for your help.

I've read that the "body" may actually just regulate temperature, maybe some
other functions. It's like when the "bones" are "dead", it just means that the
bone _marrow_ is dead, and the creature is unable to fight off radiation
poisoning.

Try my FAQ on Eating/Sleeping; I post it here weekly on Mondays, or you can get
it from the Info section of my website The Truth About Grendels, at
<http://welcome.to/grendels/>. Personally, I'd avoid using injections when
possible, especially for feeding - they don't learn to eat properly then.
There's lots of info in the FAQ that you should find helpful.

I've got a C1 Canny Norn (named Willem <g>) who's breeding with some
of my 13th generation in one world. So far all the female offspring
have had nine lobes, and are Children of the Mind. The male has
twelve lobes, and is normal/more intelligent.

I've found out how to easily tell if a C1 Norn is a CotM: put the Hand
in its focus and try to teach it the name. If it responds with its
own name, it's definitely a CotM. So it can be promptly euthanized
with BORG, exported, or whatever. Don't try AntiNorn's humane Suicide
COb, because a CotM can't use it.

BTW, I have not found CoTM in C2--has anyone? Wonder why not?

Yes, I'm very interested.

Have you added the following fixes to your world?

Martha Brummett's "No Need" COB, which reduces the number of
times a creatures yells out what he momentarily needs, thereby
interrupting it's own ability to decide to satisfy that need.

Zaps tomato plant fix COB and nut plant fix COB, both of which
fix a confusing aspect to the way the game deals with the
half-eaten fruit off these plants. Since I added these Fix COBs
my Norns feed themselves regularly.

Also, <plug>my Albian Fruit Basket is a fruit dispenser COB that
pops a different nutritious fruit out every time it is pushed or
clicked by the hand. You can get it from the link in my
sig.</plug>

Err... what does "Children of the Mind" mean? I get it that it's a
designation for... well... below-average intelligence?

Wait a moment... let's see if I understand this. :)
Make the Norn look at the hand, try to teach it the _hand's_ name, right?

BTW I finelly tested the Norns you sent me via email some time ago... my
first impression is they are quite intelligent, but unfortunately to fully
test them I would need a complete list of the English vocabulary (da**ed
German version 8) ). Or I will just splice them etc. and teach them the
German words. :)

Greetings from Tocis (Medic, Ratkeeper and generic Madman ;) )

It's a C1 thing that cropped up now and then. A "Child of the Mind"
norn spends most of its time looking at itself, and does not tend to
move, eat, play, interact with other norns, etc.

Yes.
