People should start up the Active Worlds community again. We had a great
place going on Mars at 5N, 620W. Just go to www.activeworlds.com and
download the browser. Its great! You can build in it and everything. Just
think of the fun people could have. Contests, creature meetings, photo
galleries, etc.

Ive been thinking about re-installing AW, but never got around to it
after my HD crash. I know last year it was popular for a month or two
and then nobody ever came around. I should probably re-install it and
check everything out again.

Perhaps, but there needs to be a "consume" action in AW so that when I
threaten to eat somebody, I can actually do it.

What say we go back to Mars until we get our own world again? We had a place in
Colony Alpha, I think, but that place runs slooow as molasses.

How about we all make a date to meet there and have a big community building
party?

What is Active Worlds?

Raven Shadow

unread,

to
ActiveWorlds is a 3D enviroment owned by ActiveWorlds.com inc.
Picture it like this .
You download a special browser , install & run it (win95/nt or better) .
And it looks like a web browser with 3 frames .
Left frame has various tabable menus ( 1 has the list of 3d worlds you can
enter )
Right frame is an integarted web browser ( requires MSIE )
and the Center frame shows the graphical view of your 3D surroundings.

There are other people ( represented as Avatars ) with which to chat or you
can claim a piece of land
and use the 3D objects available to build whatever you can imagine. Houses ,
cities, parks .
the only restrictions are the you imagination , the available objects ,and
the number objects you can put in
an area ( gotta ram & fps in mind ) .

It's biggest problem has been the fact that is was made to use a 3D engine
(owned by another company)
that has been VERY sluggishly developed ( until recently )

Goto http://www.activeworlds.com and decide for yourself :-)

Having just tried AW for the first time, it's fun, but I do kind of hate the system
resources it takes. But I think I could get to like it & I'll bet there are ways to speed
things along (like turn of da sounds! They near killed me with lag). Spent a while

It takes a little while to load things the first time around, but then
it caches the stuff and runs much faster next time around.

I go there often...

I'm usually in there around 7 or 8 PM EST. (no clue how that relates to any
other timezone, I'm temporally challenged.)...
somewhere around Albia Place, which, for those who don't know, is at 5N,

*grin*
First thind first ,
Every world in the Active Worlds universe has a coordinate system for
*teleporting* to distant locations quickly.
The center of a world ( they're flat like Albia ) is 0 north , south , east
& west.
The center points also called Ground Zero ( or just GZ ) and is the default
arrival point for incoming visitors.

Each coordinate is 10 meters by 10meters , so 5N 620W is 50 meters North &
6200 meters west of GZ.
So you could walk to that coord and enjoy the historic scenery , or use the
Teleport function.

4 ways to Teleport :
#1 click Teleport menu then choose To...
The next window has 2 text boxes , the top contains the name of the
current world , change it to the name of another world to go there .
Second one is for the coords , and must be in the following format
<N/S coord><N/S direction> <E/W coord><E/W direction> is the
minimum info needed.
N/S coord = how far North or South of gz
<N/S direction> = either N or S , indicating direction for the 1st
number
E/W coord = how far East or West of gz
<E/W direction> = either E or S , indicating direction for the 2nd
number

#2 look at the contents of the left frame , click on the "Worlds" tab wait
till a list of worlds appear
Left of each world name is a dot . Red = you dont have permission to
enter it . Green = you can go there
Globe looking like Earth = current world.
Left click on a world to enter it , Right click to get a list of
teleport options

3 and 4 don't matter till you want to learn to build . Which you can do in
the world AWSchool

Albia isnt flat, it is a cylinder. If you keep walking East or West you
will get back to where you started. Activeworlds isnt like that.
