For those of you who do not know the rules and mechanics of the 2nd edition
AD&D game, you need not bother yourself by reading farther. (or if you do it
won't make much sence to you)

I have been a DM on and off (mostly on) for 6 years. C1 came out at about the
same time that one of my players was complaining about being bored with the
standard races (human, elf, dwarf etc). So I set it to myself to create the
norn as a PC class, complete with it's own abilities and restrictions. So here
goes.
Str: -4 max of 3
Dex:+1 max 19
Con: 0 max 18
Int:+1 max 19
wis: -1 max 17
cha: +3 max 21

Available classes
Theif
Mage (and any specialist of it)
Theif/mage multi-class
Bard

Movement rate: 6 land 3 water

Thief ability adjustments
Climb wall: 0
Hear noise: +10%
Move Silently: +10
Hide in shadows:+5
Open locks: -5%
Pick Pockets:-10%
Read Languages: 0

Weapon restrictions
In addition to obaying class weapon rules. Norns may only wield small weapons.

Raceial advantages:
Cute. Norns strike in the minds of most humanoid races as being "cute" and
"innocent". They are very highly prized as pets and familiars, despite the fact
that they are as intelligent as most humanoid races. A normally hostile enimy
(provided it has a 7 intelligece or more) will useually let a norn live and go
about it's business, provided the norn poses no ovious threat to the being. A
sucessful Cha check will cause the norn to be ignored, or at least chased out
of the area but not attacked.
Evolveing: norns can be found just about anywhere. Norns in an area for 20
generations or more are clearly adapted to it. (purple) mountain norns, snow
norns, forest norns, even aquatic norns liveing in the ocean can be found
Sences: Norns can hear and smell 60X that of humans. They get a +1 bonus when
roling for supprise and a - 1 penalty to those trying to supprise it.

Disadvantages: Norns are very weak, compared to humanoid races. They count as a
small being, standing about 1- 1 1/2 feet tall. They are also very attractive
prey to any non-intelligent animal. Bears/wolves/large birds/carniorious
felines all LOVE norns and preffer them over other prey. Norns must be wary
when deep in the wild.

Norns live about 10 years (10 game hours, why not make it 10 years in ad&d
world)

Comments are greatly appricated

--------
Norn's Player: okay, I'm casting the "fly" spell on myself and zooming over the
village and casting "firball" strait down
Me: O.O you'll burn the whole village! Your mission is to find the lost magic
amulet, not destoy the village.
Norn's Player: But the old guy said it was fire proof, might as well torch
everything and have it be the only thing left.
Me: <groan> so much for cute an innocent.

Reminds me of college, almost 20 years ago, when we had an all-night
session of the RPG called "Traveller".
From the results of that session, the local Dungeon Master Association
awarded the entire party the "Mad Bomber of Gore" award.

Those are just the classes available to norns, right? A norn fighter? I think
not.

Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. It's a set of rules used in *many*
paper-and-pen/computer games. Most early SNES RPGs use dumbed-down versions
of the regular D&D rules.

well I had a player try a nornish figher. They used a Stiletto (long dagger) as
a 2 handed sword, but got smoshed by an orc. Nobody has tried a nornish figher
since.

I have it that there is a small colony of norns liveing in a cave near a
forest. They are unknown to most of the world at the time, but are soon found
out.

>What's AD&D?

Advanced Dungeons and Dragons.

Hmm.. actually, I can see it being pulled off by a person who's good
at RP and a DM that is good at balancing stats as a reward for
"unique" characters...

ie: I am Flib, the Norn.. My village was attacked one night by a
wandering group of Gnolls.. My people were unable to defend
ourselves, we couldn't kill any of them... The Gnolls, knowing they
had a long journey ahead of them, decided to take many of us prisoner
for food along the way.. For nights, I quivered in my dirty bag and
listened to our captors tease and torment my family and friends, the
screams of pain and anguish driving the Gnolls into a feeding
frenzy... One night, the young daughter of the leader of this band was
happily tossing a small wooden ball around.. it landed near the
opening of my bag.. Without thinking, I rolled it back to her.. She
immediately fell in love with me.. Every night afterwards, she came
back to play with me.. I seemed to replace all her playmates who had
been killed in earlier raids.. When it came time for me to be
slaughtered for the nightly feast, she defended me.. fiercely fighting
off any who came near me.. Eventually the others left me alone,
treating me more as a pet than a future meal.. Over time, I grew
stronger, thanks to slaving over the mindless tasks put to me.. My
friendship with the female Gnoll grew as well.. During an attack to
our camp by a pack of wild dogs, one slipped past those defending the
camp... It leaped at the Gnoll I had befriended and without thinking
I jumped in front of her, holding the sharp stick I had been using to
tend a fire out in front of me.. The dog impaled itself on the
stick.. The other Gnolls saw what had happened and realized I had
saved one of their own in battle.. From that day on I was accepted
into the band.. I was trained in the rudiments of battle and allowed
to go on raids with the rest of them.. A few years later, the band
starving due to a harsh winter, happened upon a village.. A village of
Norns.. it was then that everything came flooding back to me.. Despite
my hunger and my kinship with the Gnolls, I realized that I had to
leave them, I had to find a way to rejoin my people.. I stole away as
the attacks began, running from the sounds of my own people screaming
in the night..

That, imho, should be enough to allow the DM to modify the stats of a
Norn character, perhaps giving it the minimum 9 str needed for
Fighter, while adding a -3 to the character's base Int, Wis and Cha
stats.. Taking into account the company this particular character kept
while growing up..

Hmmmm you do have a point there. A norn and a gnoll make an odd couple but a
rather unique one. Too bad I don't know you IRL, you'd be a welcome addition to

I can see a fighter norn... they can slap, hit, push, throw things, but I'm
not too sure about weapon handling... (to original post) Mind if I try the
idea in one of my games? I'm thinking of adding grendles and ettins too.
Thanks for the idea.

On a related note, it is not that difficult to make a Creatures game seem
like an RPG, the Dragon Nornior world was a really lame attempt at it based
around the Dragon Warrior RPG. It might have sucked, but it showed that it's
possible.

AD&D stand for Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. A very detailed and somewhat
complicated role-playing game played with dice, a few books, maps and character
sheets. I actually play and enjoy it quite well.
