Thanks to the many users in this newsgroup, and the various members of
the Wolfpack, on October 13th, 1998, the Avengers site was removed
from Fortunecity, and Captain Cisco himself was arrested for copyright
and trademark violations. To protect his identity, as he is a 15
year-old minor, his name will not be revealed.
From the beginning of this ordeal, the havoc wreaked upon this
community was tolerated until actual sites began to go down as a
result of this so-called Squadron. That was when myself and a few
others took action.
Our first step was to find a way of tracing the ip address of "The
Demon User." That was why I made a parody site called "The Avengettes
Squadron," hoping to lure Cisco to my site. It worked.
Unknown to Cisco, and to many others, installed on my parody page was
a java script that revealed the exact ip of the user and then sent the
information via e-mail. This does not work with Netscape 4.0 and
above, but functioned rather well on the Mozilla 3.05 that Cisco was
using. As a matter of fact, nearly 30 percent of the hits on the site
were reported by Cisco himself. I guess that it burned him horribly
to see that someone was making fun of him, and turning the tables on
him, so he visited often.
With this information, we were able to piece together that he was
using multiple ip's, and multiple computers, at the same time. At
first we believed that Cisco was not working alone, and that perhaps
he ineed had a bunch of little helpers. However, it turns out that
Cisco was accessing the net from an educational institution in
Phoenix, Arizona. We were able to pinpoint the ip's from the nearly
300 hits on the parody site. He gave us all of the information we
needed just by being so obsessive.
While others were busy tracing ip's, since I am not really good with
that kind of work, I took legal action. I contacted my lawyer to see
if there existed a copyright and trademark on the name of The
Avenger's Squadron. Apprently, the copyright at the bottom of Cisco's
page was nothing more than another one of his well-crafted lies.
Remember, a name must be trademarked, not copyrighted. Within 2 days,
I had obtained the rights to the Avenger Squadron name for a mere $125
in legal fees.
After numerous attempts to contact Cisco, my lawyer had me file a
defamtion of character suit and to file a copyright complaint and
trademark infringement against the offender. Using the ip information
that my friends and I provided, the authorities were able to locate
Cisco's base of operations. The eduactional institution also helped a
great deal. I was present for the arrest. He was, needless to say,
rather bewildered.
Of course, he was let go and released of his own recognizance. His
parents apologized to me personally, and I may be gracious enough to
drop the defamtion charge.
The important thing now, is that his site is down. Now I already lnow
that there are a few other mirror sites, which I confronted Cisco and
his parents about. He tearfully claimed, under the glare of his
parents, those mirror sites were not his and were not under control
and were being run by copy-cats. I do not know why, but for some
reason, I believe him. He was rather sincere, and I respect him as
far as one would respect an intelligent but misguided youth. His
parents were rather nice and had no idea what was going on. I asked
them to go easy on him but to monitor his internet access. I am, of
course, going to drop the copyright infringement charge. I've wasted
too much money on this already.
Oh well, one down, a few more to go...
Cisco is grounded for a month, his site is down, and I am happier than
a pig in slop...
The lesson?
Point and Click GUI's can make it easy for one misguided person to
screw with a bunch of people... But mumblebox has alot of friends who
have their own point-and-click GUIs...
Oh, and btw, I removed the ip spoofing java script. If you want it,
you can find it at http://www.javascripts.com. Its out of date, since
Netscape 4.0 security is pretty tight now, but it still may work on
Internet Explorer.
Peace.

That would be WRONG!!! If the little sociopath learns at this early age
that bad actions have bad consequences, then there is a chance he will not
grow up to be a big sociopath.

With no reason, that's foolish. Sociopaths lie, and lie well. They truly
believe anything is legal or moral as long as it furthers their own ends or
desires.

That would be WRONG. See above. Allowing children to get away with bad
behavior is not doing them any favors. Showing them the consequences of bad
behavior so they can avoid bad behavior, and thus prison, as adults, is.

However, Could I urge you not to press defamation charges? I think the poor

like this. I think pressing charges could have the opposite effect to what's
intended- make him bitter and more likely to try to screw the system in the
future.

Why ? How 'bout 'cause he's just a stupid little kid. Yeah, he though he was

He's grounded for a month and his mommy's mad at him. *IF* he has no prior

No way I'm flaming this message and you! I didn't know how to put it earlier,
but I share those feelings about what's happened to that kid. Just being traced
down like that is punishment enough, I know I'd be scared out of my wits if
someone I had been annoying online had traced me down and threatened to arrest
me! I'd never do anything of the sort again! (this is said from a 13-year-old
girl, Captain Cisco was 15) Anyway, I always was against harsh punishment, it
usually just makes them even more tough to punish if they decide to do worst,
and one get's pretty mad when he ends up in jail for something that may have
seemed so unimportent as getting people fired up. Well, I better stop before I
create a whole speech, that's my lucky 25 cents!

Yeah, he should say something about how sorry he is, but he is grounded, so...
he probably can't get on the computer. Besides, somehow I don't think he
realized how much trouble he was causing. I mean, he probably thought of it
like annoying a sibling. I've seen kids cause a lot of trouble and never even
realize it until someone tells their parents about it. Then the kid gets a
talking to, maybe a little punishment, and the kid usually won't try it again.
Oh, and I think "months and months" may be a little exagerating. I never even
realized the avengers existed until last month, and I've been checking the
newsgroup since sometime this summer.

No, they've been around for months. They started out by defacing my old
Tripod Guestbook back in July.
Yeah, but getting caught really might help him. A lot of people,
especially those whose primary Internet experience is the Web, don't
quite realize that *there are real people* on the other side of the
computer screen.
(I had a 'normal' friend who changed into a *seriously* N3WB1E D00D when
he first went into a chat room. I asked him if he would act like that
if he was in a real room talking to real people. "No, but..")
It's entirely possible that this REMINDER that the Internet is not a
world unto itself, but part of Real Life, might stick with him.
Then again, it might not, but this time we know where he lives.

Though I don't really like the way this person was caught (Copywriting his
little AS name, then sueing him for copyright infringement. Very dirty pool.
Two wrongs, no matter what, do not make it right. Flame if you will, but it's
how I was brought up.) I will agree with Ping. I think apologies would be a
good start. Frankly, though he never managed to do anything short of threaten
me... I would like an apology. And the rest of these people deserve one a
hundred fold. While I don't expect this at all... it would certainly be in
order.
