Yes, I'm back :)

Well, technically I was never really gone..I just stopped playing
Creatures for a while since "burn-out" was starting to set in...I
still read all the newsgroup posts, still visited all the sites(btw:
Is there really a need for ALL those awards that are starting to choke
the various pages?)..I started Creatures up again after I finally
recived the LifeKit...

Despite the rumors, My page has not been deleted...It just hasn't been
updated in forever, which I will remedy soon...I apologize to all the
people that sent Norns...I will go thru them later this weekend and
post them all on the page, provided they follow my page standard of
non-hacked(and no, I won't post them even if they're just the
offspring of hacked norns)...

I will also post the long promised batch of 20+ generation Wolflings,
and the newer Life-Kit gen 7-8 wolflings I've managed to produce in
the past week or two;... which brings me to the real subject of this
message:

Over the past few months, I have noticed the rise in the number of
people posting messages about thier "Wolfling" runs on this newsgroups
and the "Wolfling" Norns made available on various web sites...

I've got a bit of a problem with the term "Wolfling" being used for
the experiments/runs that the large majority of the previously
mentioned posters/webmasters are doing...

The Wolfling term was origninally meant to be used for Norns that were
produced from long-term runs of Creatures in worlds that remain at
least as hostile as an unaltered starting world...Most of us who
originally started doing these tests would only import a few of the
basic Items (the few cheese, feverfew, morningglory, etc..)...The
resulting Norns from these Wolfling runs(provided they made it past a
number of generations) would have hardier immune systems, more capable
environmental interaction, better eating habits(some would even walk
the length of Albia back to the garden when they became hungy),
strange self-languages, etc....

What I've seen lately tho, are people performing experiments in which
their world has been made "safe"...Removal of weeds(WeedHide), packing
the ladscape with extra food, GrendelGuard, complete removal of the
Grendel generator, HoloDoc, the list goes on....

The results of these aren't Wolflings...The results of these are Norns
that have underdeveloped immunities, dependance on Cobs for
protection/food, norns that have no idea where to go for an
abundant/ever-present source of food, no stress factors to aid in
evolution, etc...

While the experiments that many of them perform are interesting, they
are NOT Wolfling runs....

I don't mean this as a flame towards anyone...I'm posting this because
I take great pride in the Wolflings I have produced in my various
runs...I'm also posting this because people download those "Wolflings"
on other pages expecting them to be stronger, smarter, whatever..When
in most cases, the "wolflings" they import are weaker/dumber than your
average 3rd generation hatchery that a Newbie can create...This, in
turn, causes people to lose faith in the real Wolflings...

Welcome back. I wondered where the defender of the term "wolfling"
had gotten to. I defended it in your name for a while, but then I
figured that if you didn't care why bother. :)

I went off to visit the site and I had a thought or two . . .

One is a response to your decison to make your site incompatible with
IE. You did ask for feedback, so I will give it. Otherwise I would
not bother. My opinion is that anyone who intentionally sets their
website to be incompatible with a particular browser (any particular
browser) has changed the focus of their site from its purported topic
and might was well entitle it "Browser Wars" because that will be the
message sent to the readers.

The other is, how do you (personally) distinguish between "hacked"
norns and gengineered norns, or do you? All norn stock was
gengineered at some point, norns not being a naturally occuring
species. :) If a person gives the origin of their starting stock and
adheres to your standards for the environment, I'm not sure why the
result is any less valid for Lis Morris' Hippy Norns (to use a recent
example) than it is for my Ron Norns (in the Life Kit). Some
gengineered stock will not survive under wolfling conditions, or even
unattended for any length of time. The so-called natural stock gave
rise to the Highlander gene which, while of interest as a comment on
survival in Albia, is an evolutionary dead-end. In my website section
on Warrior Norns I suggested that people not propagate "free lunch"
mutations if they wish to see interesting evolutionary behavior.
Getting back to my main concern here, I hope you are not
distinguishing between hacked and gengineered by the tool used. I
wouldn't want the users of gene-editors other than the GK to be
penalized, or for that matter talented users of hex-editors.

Well, the IE issue Is sort of long and involed...The basic part of the
reason i was considering making it incompatible with IE is that
Microsoft sent me an Email telling me I had to put an IE button advert
on my site, or they would remove thier link to my page from some
stupid MSN page that I had no idea even existed...

I've reconsidered since then and have just been too lazy to remove
that info from the page...I would be hurting no-one but would-be
visitors if I make it incompatible with IE...Besides, it looks as if
Microsoft is getting what they deserve from the Justice Department =D

As for the "hacked" Norn issue: Sorry, I should have explained that a
little differently...Gengineered Norns, such as the hippy Norns, are
no problem...People that have taken the time to create peculiarities
in thier Norns will always be able to send them to me and find them
posted in mu Unique section :)...The ones I'm having a problem with
are the Norns sent to me with an outrageous number of Lobes, swearing
up and down that it was the child of 2 hatchery norns...The majority
of these "naturally bred" wonders all have the exact same moniker as
other Norns posted throughout the Web, only advertised for what they
truly were...Some moron even sent me 'Lex" 6 different times, claiming
they were all different children of different Hatchery norns that he
raised...The fool changed the name of it every time without even
bothering to change anything else(all were the EXACT same age, genetic
makeup, physical attribs, etc...)

When I update(rebuild) the page, I'm probably just going to remove the
"Lobe" section alltogether...Same with the Sweet and Imm
sections...IMHO, they add nothing to simulation besides taking up
slots that "normal" Norns can use...

heh. You don;t go out making a decision to make a page incompatible with
internet exploder, it will be without any effort on your part- if you make a
decision to make it compatible, expect lots of work, bloodsweat and tears if
you want anything beyond simple text and links! I used to like msie, until
version 4 came along

Sorry Ping, after IE4.0 **trashed** my laptop and left it unusable for almost two
weeks while I struggled with its restore disks (no thanks to Toshiba) ... I will
stick with my Netscape Nav. It doesn't remove key parts of Win95 when you install
it.

my site actually looks best on IE 3.02, but it still works on Netscape.
