Creatures 1/2 FAQ: Downloading files
Ver. 1.02

Before you start downloading those cool cobs and cute norns you see everywhere
on Creatures pages, there are a few things you should know.
* Downloading .exe files is dangerous. They can carry viruses that
can harm your computer. If you download .exe's, even from reliable
sources, you'd do well to have an updated virus scanning program.
One such program is Norton AntiVirus
<http://www.symantec.com/nav/navc.html>.
* You need a program to unzip .zip files. Most people use WinZip
<http://www.winzip.com>
* For large downloads, get a program like GetRight
<http://www.getright.com>, which will resume the download when/if
it breaks.

Creatures 1 Files:

Most of the files you will download will be in the .zip format. You can't just
change the extension to .cob or .exp and be done with it -- life isn't that
easy, and it would probably crash your game. You need to unzip these files with
WinZip (URL above). Most updates available at the Cyberlife Creatures pages are
in .exe form. Merely double click on .exe files to install what is contained
within.

Once you have all the files unzipped, you just need to know where to put them:
(If this table doesn't appear properly in your newsreader, you are not
using a fixed width font. To see it properly, you can copy and paste
it into Notepad.)

*-------------------*---------------------*
| Extension | Folder |
|-------------------|---------------------|
| | |
| .exp | Creatures Folder |
| | |
| .cob | Creatures Folder |
| | |
| .rcb | Creatures Folder |
| | |
| .spr | Images |
| | |
| .wav | Sounds |
| | |
| .gen | Genetics |
| | |
| .txt | Anywhere, but do |
| | read them. |
*-------------------*---------------------*

.exp files are exported norns. To use them in your game, go to use
"Import creature" in the File menu of your game.

.cob files are Creatures OBjects. .rcb files are the removers. To use
them in your game, use the Injector Kit, which can be found on the Cyberlife
site
<http://www.cyberlife.co.uk/creatures/Market_square/Free_stuff/ms_free_c1.htm>.
They can also be edited/injected with BoBCoB <http://www.frimlin.co.nz/bobcob/>.

.spr files are the sprites, or images used by the game. Each is made up
of many separate images. These are used by your game when you inject a cob or
norn -- they cannot be imported directly by you. They can, however, be viewed
using programs such as BoBCoB <http://www.frimlin.co.nz/bobcob/> and BMP2SPR
<http://www.dreamscape.com/lummoxjr/creatures/>.

.wav files are the sound files. They are used in the same manner as the
sprites.

.gen files are the genomes that make each creature. These can be
imported using various programs; I use CGM (Creatures Gen Man), made by
Alexander Laemmle, available on Frimlin's pages
<http://www.frimlin.co.nz/creatures/> (elsewhere, as well, but I know it's
there). You can also use CrEd32mk1, by Kinnison <http://i.am/rod_hull>, to make
hatchery eggs using .gen files.

.txt files are merely ReadMes. Read them. ;)

.exp files are exported norns. To use them in your game, go to use
"Import creature" in the File menu of your game.

.cob files are Creatures OBjects. To use them in your game, use the
Agent Injector, which came with the game. Updates are available from
<http://www.creatures2.com/>. They can also be edited/injected with BoBCoB
<http://www.frimlin.co.nz/bobcob/>.

.s16 files are the sprites, or images used by the game. Each is made up
of many separate images. These are used by your game when you inject a cob or
norn -- they cannot be imported directly by you. They can, however, be viewed
using programs such as BoBCoB <http://www.frimlin.co.nz/bobcob/> and BMP2S16
<http://www.dreamscape.com/lummoxjr/creatures/> and S16Viewer
<http://www.cnd.co.nz/creatures/>.

.wav files are the sound files. They are used in the same manner as the
sprites.

.gen files are the genomes that make each creature. These can be
imported using the Genome Injector by Chris Double
<http://www.cnd.co.nz/creatures/>.

.egg files are Hatchery eggs. These eggs appear in the Hatchery applet.

.txt files are merely ReadMes. Read them. ;)
