Greetings,
I have been trying to find a way to get my video card to work with
DirectX 3. I have tried to read all of the FAQ's and Wizards to the
point that my wife is starting to worry. I have a Number Nine Motion
771 Video Card with 2 MB of Ram, PCI, that seems to not to want to
work with Westwood's Game Command & Conquer: Red Alert. (I have a Dell
P100c Dimension with 32 MB RAM) When I try to start the game, I get
the error message:

Unable to allocate primary video buffer -

Aborting". I read the Readme.txt file which suggests:

If you receive an "Unable to allocate primary video buffer -Aborting."
error message try reinstalling the Microsoft DirectX drivers. If
reinstalling the Microsoft DirectX drivers does not solve this
problem, then that means that your video card manufacturer has
not updated their video drivers to be Microsoft DirectX compliant.
Call your video card manufacturer for updated drivers.

I have tried same, with no success. I have been advised to acquire the
DirectX 3b drivers from MS, but all I can find are the DX5 drivers. I
have not heard or read many flattering things about DX5, and am leary
on installing them. When I look in the DirectX drivers box, (In
Uninstall window in Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add/Remove Program,
uninstall Direct X drivers, there are NO Dislay Drivers,
It says there is no hardware support) Despite this claim, My Video
Card manufactorer assures me that my card does support DirectX, and I
have updated the drivers all the way up to the brand new Beta driver.

IS THERE ANY HOPE THAT I WILL PLAY THIS GAME UNDER WINDOWS?

Any help you provide will be appreciated.

Um, lets see the possibility of you playing Red Alert. Almost impossible.
The only way you could play Red Alert is:
1) Rip that stupid freakin graphic accelerator card out
2) Download Direct X 5
3) Wait for Direct X 6
4) Download the latest video driver from your graphic accelerator company
from the web site.

If you pick 2, I'll give you the site to download it.

Gee, it never hurts to help. But then again, when DOES the hurting stops?

Load the Red Alert options program in Windows. Then deselect "Allow back buffer in Video
Memory" and "Hardware filed blits" then try it.

I had the same problem but I solved it by using another windows95
video-card driver (not directX but the video-card).

I had the same problem. I fixed it by going into system Properties
then graphics and setting my hardware acceleration to full.

Good luck

does that really work? I had an ISA video card so it wouldn't run. I
fixed it by spending $40 on a new video card. It works fine now.
