I have purchased this game retail. The no-cd copy protection is quite
annoying, I'm sure we all know the reasons why. Anyway, I can't seem
to find a no-cd exe for Civ 3: Complete Edition. Does one exist?

Cant see one on any of the sites I know of. (Although all the other civ3's
seem to have cracks)
You probably need to mount a virtual CD.
Post back if you need help with this.

I've never mounted a virtual CD. How does one do that?

I think you just need the individual no-cd cracks for each of Civ3, PTW, and
C3C.

Get a copy of alcohol 120 here....
http://www.alcohol-soft.com/

Use the image making wizard to make an image of your civ CD. (creates a big
file on your hard drive)

Then use either Alcohol120 or daemon-tools to mount that file as a virtual
disk. It will then appear as if you have the Civ CD inserted, and should
pass the CD check in civ3. (some new games this wont work for but civ 3
should be ok)

Alcohol120 has good help file if youre not sure about anything.

Thanks! I'll try that this weekend.

I've seen that mentioned elsewhere, but I don't understand how that
would work. The old no-cd cracks worked by simply replacing the game-
supplied .exe file with the no-cd .exe file. But there aren't 3
different .exe files to replace with the complete edition, just one
exe file.

So I wasn't exactly sure how to go about that.

There are 3 different .exe files with complete. If you used the standard
install path Vanilla Civ III is in C:\Program Files\Atari\Civilization III
Complete\Civilization3.exe. Play the World would be C:\Program
Files\Atari\Civilization III Complete\civ3PTW\Civilization3X.exe. And
Conquests is C:\Program Files\Atari\Civilization III
Complete\Conquests\Civ3Conquests.exe. When you click on the desktop/start
menu shortcuts that are installed with the game, the Civilization III
Complete runs the Conquests file. If you want to play Vanilla or play the
world you'd need to navigate to the directories and click the executable. I
myself made desktop shortcuts to each myself.

To me though, I'd rather stay out of trouble and install the disk when I
want to play. It just takes a minute, and not worth the headaches you'd
incur from getting caught with a crack.

LOL! 'Caught'? Caught by who? He owns the game anyway, he hasn't even
pirated anything.

I didn't get that one either :)

Does a no-cd exe exist for 1.22 Conquerors/conquests/whatever it's
called exactly? I couldn't seem to find one online. I googled, and
looked on megagames, gamecopyworld and gameburnworld.

Well, tried it this weekend, couldn't get it to work. I think my
image might not be the best, ubt I dunno maybe I don't have daemon
tools set up correctly. What way do I need to set Alcohol120 to
create an image that daemon tools can mount successfully?

gamecopyworld.com under civ3
I use it and it works just fine.

Go into image making wizard, select your datatype to general-protected-cd,
choose the CD-drive that holds the disk you want to image, click on next
Select where you want the image file to be stored.
I only get the option of storing it as an .mds file. This will create both a
.mds and a .mdf file. I would think daemon tools would be able to mount one
of these, but if not I know alcohol mounts its own files fine, in fact thats
what I use. Or just select a format that daemon tools likes. (.ccd is
another generic one)
To mount in alcohol in alcohol, just set your number of virtual drives in
view->options, then once thats done (takes a while) right click on one of
the virtual drives on the bottom panel of the window, choose mount image,
then select the .mds file you created earlier (needs the corresponding .mdf
file in the same directory)

Good luck.

Ah, ok. It confused me because it said "Fixed CD", not "no cd". I got
the impression it was just bug fixes!

Anyway, that worked. Thanks!
