Microprose hasn't speculated when the official release date is, but I
believe there is some stuff in the FAQ which is located at
<http://www.interlog.com/~krupo/faq.html>.

No, it isn't. Civ 3 is in development and is due out next year.

No, Call to Power is just Call to Power from Activision, it isn't in
the Microprose line of Civilization games. Civ3 is still in
development.

No it's not RTF FAQ

But what's with the copyright? Is "CIvilization" not a trademark?

Evidently Activision thought it wasn't. Microprose thought it was.
A lawsuit was fought over the matter, with results that I don't even
begin to understand. It didn't help that there is a third example of a
game called "Civilization", i.e. a board game which (a) has nothing to
do with the computer games, and (b) predates all Civilization computer
games... Anyway, Microprose were soon afterwards to launch their own
newest Civilization title, called "Civilization II: Test of Time" which
is specifically *not* Civ3, but a sort of expanded version of Civ2 whose
main features are (a) the capability to play on more than one map at
once, and (b) more use of event-triggered things - being able to build a
certain unit after something else has happened, or being given a certain
technology upon achieving something. It has three different ways of
doing this: using the "Extended Original" game where you play on after
landing on Alpha Centauri, or some "Fantasy" and "Sci-Fi/Futuristic"
settings which are each set on four worlds. Of the three, the Fantasy is
the best at integrating the four separate worlds into one game right
from the start (and the only one to have a scenario written for it
specifically, distributed with the game: The Midgard Scenario.) The
Sci-Fi setting brings all four worlds into the game one after the other,
rather than all at once. The "Extended Original" is the least
satisfying, as you don't actually get to do much on Centaurus (although
of interest is the fact that you can't build either engineers on
Centaurus, you have to send the new Colonist unit - replacing
engineers - through from Earth. The planet is also a nuclear-free zone.)
Or you can play the Original Civ2, though without such little things as
wonder movies or the "throne room" that your grateful subjects add
things to.
One wonders if the fact that ToT clearly wasn't really playtested
and bugtested is anything to do with the fact that it was rushed out
almost immediately after Call To Power, probably as a response, and thus
you need to download a large patch to make it playable...

Jonathan.

Sure, but the question is: IS Col-CTP Colonization or not....

IMHO it LOOKS extremly like Civ2, even the steering is BAD, the old one in
civ2 and alpha centauri is IMHO MUCH better, i HATE to switch between keys and
mouse, and u cant play ctp ONLY with mouse... Okay, u can, but it is SLOW to
play IMHO

the settlers/engineers in civ2 are IMHO the only unit that is not conversed to
ctp..... and they are good! ever tried to make a good infra for a town in ctp?

btw. sorry 4 my english, but its not my native language, and its a long time
ago, since i was in the us or the uk...

Yes. But more than one company had the rights to that name, with
varying license agreements. The end result is that there are three
game lines which use the Civilization name -- Microprose, Avalon
Hill/Hasbro, and Activision.

Microprose had the license to use Civilization, based on Sid Meier's
original game. But Avalon Hill also published a board game of that
name, and that ALSO had a computer version created, so Microprose went
to the board game creator and got a license to use the name.
Activision wanted to do its own version of this kind of game, and
acquired a license to use the name from Avalon Hill.

A lot of lawsuits and company acquisitions later (Avalon Hill got
purchased by Hasbro, which had purchased Microprose) and Activision
was left with a license to use the name, but not to use it as a
standalone title, nor imply that it was a sequel to the Microprose
games. Avalon Hill itself retains the rights to use the name as well,
but as part of the same company family now as Microprose, there is no
longer any conflict between them over the name.

Note that there is some true conceptual relationship between the
Avalon Hill game and Sid Meier's creation, which was acknowledged long
ago. The actual games are different, but the idea of tech advances
and growth by food are similar. AH computer games were never
excellent, but were also not too horrible, though I fear that Hasbro's
handling may not result in improvements on them (nor on Microprose
support, though we can always hope for things to change).
