You are the resident French expert, can you tell me about this Mathieu
Flamini bloke that we have just signed from Marseille? Is he rated in
France?

I will step in first with opinions.

I watched a bunch of French league, cup and Uefa games in the season past and he is rated in
France based on my still sketchy Francaise understanding. From all the Marseille matches I saw
him in, he is very very much a grafter and covers every part of the midfielder. He does not have
great skills - not in the league of Vieira. Not tall like Vieira and rather light-weight as
well. What he lacks he makes up for in industry and being able to read the game to cover the
holes in midfield. In short, he is no Grimandi. The kid has a future.

How is he for range of passing etc?

As far as I can remember, the matches he was in he only put in short passes to teammates after
picking up/winning back the ball. No raking 50M pin-point cross-field defense prising wonder
passes.
He did cover the back five (Marseille played sweeper-532 when Arigo took over) and popped up in
the box from time to time. Even at times played on the right. Think he scored one goal last
season.

Actually didn't seen him much. He was playing in the U21 team that Amigo
used to train before Perrin as fired. Then he gave him the opportunity to
get a few games with the main squad, and he turned out to be a good player.
He hadn't signed a pro contract yet and that is why he can leave Marseille
for a foreign club (such as Alladiere with Paris a few years ago).
HE runs a lot, strong will ,a bit like Deschamps. That's about all I can
say. He is promising but you can't tell now if he will become a top player,
road is still long.
AS you know Arsenal likes to take young promising french players. That is
also true that we have good training firms ;-)
