very true about patches and pirate versions struggling to play catch up.
Tom's Hardware is jumping on a bandwagon they dont really understand,
People have moaned like mad about BF2 to get DICE to fix the various
issues, but we still bought 1 million copies in 2 months,
and 750,000 of those million people are playing online on ranked
sevrers, according to the Leaderboard numbers.
BF2 is a stunning game, even with all the buglets,
patch 1.01 was nasty, patch 1.02 fixed something.
There are some custom maps out there now,
including an 'Al Khafji Docks' clone for BF2,
and one amazing map called 'Jungle_Stream'
no Scans, no UAV, no Arty, no Vehicles just pure jungle foot combat.
which shows what the BF2 engine can do with dense foliage,
this is what BFV should have been like.

Actually, my impression from reading the column, is the writer was using
BF2 as an example (a recent example), and lambasting the entire "release
now, patch later" mentality that seems to have crept in.

Alas, that's a natural outcome of large corporations being involved. It's
the "quarterly mentality". They have to show steady income every quarter
and letting a game slip (even if it results in higher final profit) means
uneven income, which makes the investors uneasy.
Alas, to get a decent number of gamers into servers, we need to get enough
people with lemming minds to buy it, just to provide "bodies". And that
requires slick ad campaigns (magazines and boxes) which requires the deep
pockets of corporations.
If they were required to accept payment in the same manner as they release
games..
EA GAMES: We didn't get your check yet...
BUYER: Well, it is on the way. Soon, soon ...
...months later ...
EA GAMES: We finally got your check, but you didn't sign it.
BUYER: Oh .. I must have a memory leak.
.... one month later ...
EA GAMES: We got your check , but it is only for $20.
BUYER: Well, I am working on a patch for that.
... one month later ...
EA GAMES: We got your patched check for the other $30, but can't seem to
cash it.
BUYER: Well, you need to uncash the first check first, then the patch..
...days later ...
EA GAMES: We got the patch working, but it is still $20 short.
BUYER: Well, you have to expect a bug or two. You can still spend the $30 ,
right?
EA GAMES: Yeah, but...
BUYER: Your choice ... play with what you got or toss it. I think we are
even.

Arguing on usenet is like competing in the special
olympics, even if you win you're still retarded.
