I was wondering who used these items, and if their power was worth the risk
they seem to entail. "Draws upon the life-blood of the user" is a bit scary
-- I don't want it to be like slow acting poison!

But they sound quite cool, so anyone have any opinions? I need to know if
it's worth the trek all the way back to Beregost or not!

the claw is fairly decent but it knocks 2 points off your constitution and
increases yor save vs death role but it has some advantages that
shouldnt be overlooked

I liked the claw- it diminishes your resistance to poison and some
types of spells (death magic I think) but gives some nice bonuses in
trade. I can't remember what the horn does. It's been a long time
since I played BG1.

Motley
PS. the claw is worn like a ring and it is a cursed item- so if you
want to remove it you will need a remove curse spell.

the horn is not so great, but ok...the claw is really cool with some
setbacks...but they are not found in beregost, you can buy them in high
hedge

I found this item best for Dwarven characters like Yeslick and Kagain.
Enhancing their already good magical resistance make them excellent frontline
mage killers, and their high constitution makes up for the life-sapping
penalty.

The life of the user in question is that it drops your constitution by 2
points on a permenent (ie until removed with remove curse) basis. This is
fine if your mage has a constitution that's 18, as dropping it to 16 makes
no difference to how many hit points per level you get. If you con is 17 or
lower though, you will actually see your hit point maximum drop from it's
current level! For example, a 4th Level mage gets upto 4 HP per level, +1
for 15 con, +2 for 16 con, but +2 also for any CON above 16. If you have 18
therefore, it drops from +2 to +2 and you lose nothing at all.

Viconia is a very sickly character, as as Xan. With Con already so low, they
will actually end up being demoted to 3HP maximum per level if they were to
be subject to a -2 penalty.

Hope this helps.

I've put it on Coran, because he can at least wear armour strong enough to
protect him well. But I realise he should probably have taken it off when I
levelled him, as I could hardly get any points for him at last levelling,
and wondered why!

I did have it on my lead character, but it did some weird things, like she
could work out how to go and open things, often she'd just stop, stuck. A
bug, or perhaps the Claw making her mind as fuzzy as her image?!!

The hitpoints will go up when you take the claw off.
