I have a human Paladin/Cavalier. According to the manual, Warriors
(including Paladins) can gain expertise in weapon specialization beyond
what the other character classes get. I can't seem to get any of my
proficiencies above 2 stars. Is this normal, could it be something I'm
missing? I thought that I could hypothetically obtain up to 5 stars in
a proficiency as a warrior...

Fighters can gain proficiencies beyond two *'s, up to five for melee
weapons. Non-fighter warrior-types (Paladins and Rangers) can only get two
*'s. Its the price you have to pay to have Paladin or Ranger special
abilities. If this price is too much for you, play a fighter.

Your question has been answered. But if you had checked your manual you can
also read all about this there.

In article <8qvv01$da2$1...@news.inet.tele.dk>,

I know, RTFM, but there wasn't much on weapon proficiency there (just a
paragraph) and what I believe was mentioned stated that warriors
(including Paladins, Rangers and Barbarians) can increase there
proficiencies to Grand Master Status. This is from memory, but I
thought I read this right. Hence, this paradox caused a cascade failure
in the ol' neural tissue only to be rectified by the neophyte post of
my complete, personal, traumatic quandary. I'm so sorry to waste your
time on such a menial question. 1000 pardons...

No problem at all. It's just that so many people immediately throw the
manual away. Does no harm to read it a little.

You can get your two weapon proficiency up to 3 stars, at least I did that
at the start. Combined with 2 stars for long sword and 2 stars for flail
(now that I know where to get a good one early on) the Cavalier can do a
reasonable amount of damage. I'm starting to think that a two-handed
front-line fighter with decent AC is really important for the main character
given the types of NPCs the game gives you. In multiplayer this wouldn't be
such an issue.
