I've taken 300 HP off this guy and he just keeps healing himself back to
100% health. Is there some trick I'm missing. The game let's suggests you
can walk away and get him next time or take him on. Any tips for taking him
down?

Thanks,

D

Prep all your characters while he is blue. Summon some monsters for him to
distract so he doesn't concentrate on your fighters. Cast Lower
Resistance(if you have spell sequencer you can load 3 of these in, Greater
malison is great too if you want to use a death spell on him) and breach on
him. have your fighters thwack away while your mages hit him with magic
missile (sequencers work well). Whenever a stoneskin goes up hit him with a
breach spell. Be sure to have your fighters separated so 1 buffet attack
doesn't blow them all away. An archer in the back is also quite useful with
fighting dragons. Your mages will be doing the most damage though I believe
Firkraag has a -11AC.

If all else fails you can take him on later or cheese him with cloudkill but
I totally don't recommend that. A fight with a dragon is something to
remember :)

Keep trying, the reward is well worth it.

Spoiler:

mmmm, the guy has ac - 12, 184 hp
str 25
dex 15
con 15
int 17
wis 3
cha 9

THAC0: -19 (!)
fire resistance: 100
Magic Resistance: 50

Conclusion: cast two lower resistance spells on him and kill him with skull
traps, cloud kills, magic missles, whatever, while your fighters or summoned
monsters keep him buysy.

Tactic that works and makes things easy:

While he's blue cast all kinds of pretections (fire, evil, stoneskins, spirit
armor etc) and haste (most important) and Resist Fear.

Station your mages (if you have two) along the walls well away from him. Array
your fighter/cleric types all around him. Bezerk anyone you can (Korgan Minsc).
If you are a high enough level have your clerics blade barrier themselves. Kai
your Kensai, Stunning Blow/Quvivering Palm your monk.

Summon up a few critters for him to play with and put them right up next to him
as well (note, gate doesn't let you do this since those creatures arrive red and
will start the right immediately).

Pause, have your mages both cast lower resistance at the same time. Unpause as
soon as they are about to cast have all your fighters attack at the same time.
The goal is to get in a lot of damage in a short period of time before he can
fight back. Once both LR's have hit he's not magic immune and I start hosing him
with Melf's Acid Arrows. They do sure damage and can have the lingering effect
that ruins his spells. If you have a cleric/druid with insect swarm it might be
worth keeping him/her out of the mix to toss this spell on him once his MR
drops. Anyway, once you can pour spells on him he's pretty much toat.

Strange... Me I use mostly fighters to kill him.
My wizards only were casting "dispel magic" and the like (mostly the
variant that only dispel spells on foe, I don't know the english name);
and the fighter were in haste/chant/bless/strength potion/defensive
harmony and so on.

probably the funniest thing that happened my entire game happened with
Firkraag. Actually post-mortem Firkraag. I did the typical beat down on em the
first time I fought em.Well, the first reload anyways heh. Anyways, after I
beat em down and get the loot I forgot to save. Im walking out and run into
some hob-goblin group of a couple priests and some fighters. Well, since I only
had 5 people at the time (I left a slot open for 'quest' people) I sent minsc,
korgan and my fighter thief to deal with em. I start watching TV as its a small
fight. well first round minsc and my fighter get held. Next round korgan gets
held. I was like WTF is going on. Viconia was out of just about everything so I
hadda send edwin down with his leftover spells to take everyone out. I dont
know, I thought it was funny, imagining the euphoria in the aftermath of
slaughtering thier first dragon. Congradulating themselves on their prowess and
all that, then getting humbled by some lowly hobgoblins.
