I disarmed the traps with a thief, then took two thieves through into
the back room in then shadows and killed the guys there. Then I get a
mage to cast stinking cloud in the room and the archers from both
sides took everyone out.

Quickly rush him with your fighters, and get a mage to cast
dispel magic. When his protective spells are gone,
hit him with everything you have. 2 fighters and 2 archers
should kill him pretty quickly.

Disarm the 3 traps with your theif. get a hiding theif to lure him out and
then get him with everything you have. dont use dispell magic just use
spells like magic missiles or that scorcher thing he should go down quickly.
dont try to kill the horror things.
You should have disarmed the traps, there is 3 or 4 traps 2 of which
summons the horrors. After that stealth a thief and send him/her into
the room with Daveorn and wait until he runs out of spells (dimension
door and the globe). Now it's easy picking.

No the second time through I set them off by purpose just to get a
little extra XP.

One of the rare occasions when AI should be turned on.
For some reasons, your characters can see Davaeorn is even after he's
casted dimension door. I couldn't see him on my screen but my NPCs kept
running around and killed him eventually without me clicking once
(except initial target and attack command of coz).
I had the same result without scripts or AI.

After dying numerous times down there, this is what I did:
My two thieves stealthed and hid in next to the trapped passage.
Mr. Boots of Speed (Minsc) drank a potion of Magic blocking and tripped the
traps and back pedalled (coincidently luring one of the horrors into that
flying wheel for a nice bit of damage). Minsc then taunted the horrors so they
chased him.
The Dwarven priest healed Minsc whenever the Horrors caught up to him
Thieves moved in, used protection scrolls and potions, and pelted yon mage with
Arrows of Biting and Acid Arrows.
Minsc and the Battle Horrors Ran around and around and around, trailed by the
priest and my main character (both of which had missile weapons and Cure Light
Wounds)
Finally, Dynaheir whapped any bad guy within reach with Magic Missile,
Scorchers, Wands, and sling pellets +1.
Note: this is probably *not* the best way to do it, but it was fun watching the
Horrors play "Ring around the Rosy" with Minsc.

Did this remind anyone else of the 'arena' scene from Life of Brian? :)

* Stoke me a clipper - I'll be back for Christmas
I completely missed the battle horrors. Imoen crept forwards looking for
traps and succesfully managed to disarm them - I was a bit wary about
traps in the mines by then as I'd nearly lost her on the level above.
She was sneaking around scouting our the opposition when she triggered a
magic missile trap in the passage outside the room with the archers and
the mage. Fleeing the magic missiles (boots of speed) she ran over
another snare that had a more imeadiate and damaging effect, so
bloodied, she doubled back the way she came - It must have been quite a
sight for the rest of the party - Imoen tearing back into their room,
hottly persued by those bloody magic missiles. The boots of speed meant
that she could stay ahead of them, but not outrun them. And unlike the
fireball in the passages below Firewine, the missiles follow you around
corners until you finally accept the inevitable . . .
She survived, but by the time we reached level four, she was being very
cautious. So we never got to play with the battle horrors :-(
She triggered the last trap, however, whilst trying to disarm it. Again,
the boots of speed got her out of harms way, but alerted Deveorn, who
Dimension Doored straight into the resulting wheel of fire.
What followed can only be described as a game of tag, as Deveorn would
appear, surrounded by his Protection from Normal Missiles, Party and
attendent skeletons would rush over - my archer's being rendered
ineffective, and he'd DD away again.
But we caught him in the end.

I like the Boots of Speed. In my case they're an invaluable aid to
Imoen. She pretty much cleared the way though the Firewine Dungeon after
she'd dealt with the traps with a combination of stealth, back-stab, and
speed that resulted in a kind of one-sided game of "Peek-a-Boo" with the
resident Kobolds.
Whatever . . .
