So, I've rescued his girl; she's in the party. I go and talk to Minsc; he
offers to rejoin the group. At that moment, both he and his partner are in
the group, but Minsc immediately turns hostile anyway (ironically, the first
person he attacked is his partner!)
I've attempted various permutations of removing her, saying no first, all
kinds of combinations, but Minsc is locked into his hostile mode.
Is there some kind of cheat or editor that can undo this? It's clearly a
bug; there's no reason for Minsc to turn on his own partner ...
CC responses to sj...@io.com if possible; thanks (although I'll be checking
here, too).

Probably it's not a bug, I assume his clock starts ticking the moment he
joins and won't stop when kicked out. As he is really longing to rescue
Dynaheir you should take him with you to do that and you should do it
immediately. The mines can wait as everyone else only stated they wanted to
go to Nashkell and you took them there...
As for turning on his partner well I guess Minsc got into some kind of
berserker rage.
So if you want to have both Minsc and Dynaheir in your party (which is
advisable IMHO), you should find an earlier savegameand recruit Minsc again.

It's a bug. We're talking about a good-aligned character doing the
following, in exactly this order, all at once:
(A) Greeting the party in a friendly fashion.
(B) Asking to rejoin the group.
(C) Rejoining the group with a jaunty little speech about kicking evil's
butt
(D) ... and then immediately murdering his partner.
That order of events isn't rational within the game's context (neither the
Baldur's Gate storyline nor AD&D in general). It is a bug, and bugs need
fixes.
Once again: does anyone have a fix for the bug? Some way to edit out Minsc's
hostility clock, or re-set its value? I did a Google search for earlier
discussions of the bug, and the only fix I found (which involved Dire
Charming Minsc and a bit of a member-shuffle) didn't work with my install of
the game. I'm using TotSC with the most current patch.
Thanks in advance for your help -

This description of what I did in a similar circumstance may or may not
prove useful:
<repost>
The first time I played BG1, my party took too long to go and rescue
Dynaheir, and whenever we walked onto the gnoll bridge, Minsc attacked
us. We left him just at the edge of the area and went to rescue
Dynaheir without him, but he always attacked us even when we came back
with her. So we dropped him from the party, but whenever Dynaheir
joined us, so did he, only to attack us when we came close to him.
Eventually my party gave up on rescuing Dynaheir at all - dropped
Minsc at the gnoll bridge and damn well went and found someone else to
adventure with, thank you very much!
Recently I decided to import some of my own characters into a save
game from that time, it being the easiest way to experiment with a
strategy that had occurred to me in relation to another matter. When
we happened to venture into the gnoll stronghold area, there stood
Minsc, still in his blue circle, and there was Dynaheir still
languishing away inside the stronghold, unrescued.
So we nipped in there and rescued her. On our way out, we met a
now-hostile Minsc and charmed him. Then we left the area, without him
since he was charmed and thus couldn't leave the area himself. When we
came back, his circle was blue again, but we still couldn't pick him
up, since he wouldn't converse with us. So we dropped Dynaheir, picked
*her* up once more - and bingo, Minsc was a member of our party, at
the same level as Dynaheir now was since we'd first spoken to her as a
more experienced party, rather than the lvl 1 character he'd been when
we dropped him. In other words, he'd been recreated as a new NPC. This
we found rather useful. :-)
No sign of his previous equipment, of course, which might make this a
less-than-successful strategy for everyone; but we had plenty of cash
to use in re-equipping him, and he hadn't been carrying anything
special when we dropped him. So we didn't mind. :-D

Note that the spell we used was Charm, rather than Dire Charm.

I made the same mistake which resulted in Minsc going berserk. Froze him
with a spell, removed him from the group. Then went and saved Dynaheir.
Came back, Minsc was still where I had left him. But now he was neutral
and simply wouldn't talk to us any more. It was obvious that he didn't
recognize Dynaheir as his protegee any more.
Clearly a bug.
Oke
As my message went on to say, you *can* sometimes retrieve him from
silent blue-circled-ness by dropping D and then picking her (and him) up
again. I agree it's a bug, though, 'cause doing so makes a new Minsc in the
process.
Does anyone know how long you have before Minsc goes beserk?
I've always, and without any unfortunate Minsc reactions thank
goodness, cleared out the mines first and then gone off to rescue
Dynaheir.
> As for turning on his partner well I guess Minsc got into some kind of

I see it as being an intended penalty for dawdlers. A beserk Minsc
is not a good-aligned character and he is without partners. Good-
aligned NPCs will not, on their own initiative, attack a group of
paladins; a beserk Minsc will (and then later complain about the
groups low reputation!).
> Does anyone know how long you have before Minsc goes beserk?
Ten game-days from first speaking to him, I believe. It *is* a fair
while in playing terms, but you still might reasonably think you didn't
need to hurry particularly, seeing you don't have to in most game
situations.
It's not a bug. You didn't play close attention to what either Minsc
or Dynaheir said about their encounter with the Gnolls.
To quote Dynaheir: "Minsc took YET ANOTHER blow to his mighty
berserker head..."
The man is suffering from mental illness that will cause him to go
insane if his quest isn't fulfilled in his own time frame. Boo not
withstanding.

It makes sense in the context of the story, and it's not a bug. You
just have to pay close attention to what your party members are saying
because they give you queues and clues that are important. None more
than Minsc. It was obvious to me when I first hired him that he was a
borderline lunatic: he told of being struck on the head, and he was
raving about his miniature giant space hamster and all that. But I
could also recognize he was on a quest to rescue a fair maiden.

You can try to download Gatekeeper at www.mud-master.com, and check
the Variables or Global Variables section. See if there are any
related to Minsc. I don't know which ones may be, but I know that in
BG2 certain variables only exist if you talked to someone so you can
try removing any variables related to MINSC TALK, MINSC TIMER, or
stuff like that, and when you talk to him again with Dynaheir in your
group he may think it is the first time. I've never done this in BG1,
but it's a possibility.
Thanks very much. After some experimentation, I ended up with a variant of
your approach, then I simplified the method down to the fewest necessary
steps. Here's how I fixed the Case of the Unwelcome Rescuee.
(Situation) You have removed Minsc from the party prior to rescuing his
partner. Now, she is rescued, and you'd like Minsc back in the group.
(1) With Dynaheir in tow, go find Minsc and speak to him. He'll respond with
a friendly greeting and ask to rejoin.
(2) Accept. Minsc will re-join the group and make a jolly speech about
fighting evil. He will also add something about insuring Dynaheir's safety.
(3) Minsc will then immediately scold you and attack. Ironically, if
Dynaheir is closest, she'll be attacked first.
(4) Charm Minsc. Either Charm Person or Dire Charm will work.
(5) Before the spell wears off, speak to the charmed Minsc. Minsc will
deliver his version of the "I'm sorry you want me to leave the party"
speech, once again mentioning Dynaheir's safety (ha!) and the two of them
will leave together. Both will now have blue circles.
You can invite them back at any time now, by speaking to either Minsc or
Dynaheir. Minsc will no longer be hostile. You'll need to let the charm
spell wear off (or Dispel Magic on it) before you'll be able to leave the
map.
I attempted to make the process even simpler by skipping the first three
steps and just charming Minsc at first sight. This doesn't work. Once
Minsc's hostile-clock has ticked over, he needs to deliver that little
you-agreed-to-help-my-cause speech.
To expedite the process, I used Gatekeeper to stock the party up with a
short stack of Charm Person, Dire Charm, and Dispel Magic scrolls. When
charming Minsc, have every available magic-user charm him at once; he's not
likely to make every saving throw.
Thanks again. And for those in the mood for a little old-fashioned gamebook
fun, download Ring of Thieves, free, from my site ;)

Well, take a close look at Minsc. He is a fighter who obviously has been hit
on the head a little too often and he has a very simplistic view of good and
evil. He expects you to do what you promised. And he gets enraged if you
don't. Not keeping your promise makes you evil in his eyes. So he attacks
you and your party.
