I'd like to be sure they'll just venture off on their own for a short time
or just hang out there until I return...& won't drop/sell/lose/give away any
items/armor/weapons.
Also will they gain any EXP or heal up any or learn any new spells ever or
remain exactly as I left them (as if put on pause)?
And is there a chance they could die or even be injured on their way back to
CC or just waiting for my return?
Will they ever get tired of waiting & give up on me or will they be loyal &
wait for me?
Any other helpful info/warnings about this? I'd do this if all was
well...for temporary quests (Vallen & his sphere or others).
Mostly. There are some items (which are important to the plot) they will
give back to you before they leave, for example the portal key from the
first dungeon.

But yeah, you've got nothing to worry about here :)
They'll either keep or give back to you all their items. None will be lost.

Remain exactly as you left them.

No.

They'll wait. Korgan will expect money to rejoin the party.

It will break a romance if you ask that character to leave the
party--they don't like being told you don't want them around. Jaheira,
even outside of romance, will throw a major tantrum if removed, and may
leave the party forever (definitely will leave the party forever if you
keep removing her).
As implemented in BG1:
When a character in the party goes up-level while an NPC is
"off-party," the re-joined NPC will have different number of
XP's (and possibly different level, weapon specialization,
etc.).
Is that not the case in BG2?

So is this a potential exploit? If you feel a certain character (not being
romanced) may die on your way back to copper cornet or on a temporary side
quest you can remove them & use that as a way to keep them safe (or teleport
them back to the CC for you in 100% safety)?
Yep, pretty much.
*mull*
It might be possible for them to be killed while they are leaving the
area (after they have left the party and gone blue circled). I'm not
sure what would happen there. But they won't die outside your presence.

Yes. I don't /think/ any of the nasty dialogue options will chase her
out, but I'm not sure. I don't know how far you've gotten into the
game, but:
I think, though I'm not sure, that she may leave forever if you make a
deal with Firkraag and/or attack Valygar. She will leave if you attack
Drizzt. (But I believe she can be picked up back at the Harper Hold in
Athlatka afterward, if you attack Drizzt. The other ways of making her
leave take her out of the game.) If your Reputation falls to 6 or below
while she's not in the party and she's on good terms with the Harpers,
she'll call a band of other Harpers and attack when you approach her,
instead of rejoining.
Spoilers for Jaheira's quest.
If your Reputation is 6 or lower when you face Galvery, Jaheira will
leave unless you're romancing her.
Spoilers for the Druid Grove.
Predictably, Jaheira will leave the party and attack you if you poison
the Druid Grove.
Spoilers for the end of Chapter Five.
Jaheira will leave and attack you if you hand Adalon's eggs over to the
Lesser Demon Lord.
It's not the case in either game, to my knowledge. An NPC whom you've never
addressed before has a few different "incarnations" depending on when you pick up
him or her, but once you've had someone in the group, they stay at that same level
thereafter.
For example, if you pick up Xzar and Montaron (at level 1) on your way to the
Friendly Arm Inn, immediately put them down again, and come back when you're level
8, they will still be level 1. OTOH, if you evade them, and speak to them for the
first time when you're at level 8, they'll be level 6 (because BG1 NPCs don't
start any higher than 6.)

(Many cases of Jaheira being Good not Neutral snipped.)
Well, I suppose they have implemented some of the 3e rules, so why not
allowing druids to be other than true neutral?
It does seem ,however, that an awful lot more time was spent on Jaheira than
any other character. I blame the new portrait, it's obviously extra
seductive to programmers ;)

If you can, see what happens to, for example, Branwen.
(Just to be sure, take the PC up-lev -- I don't remember if I
tested this w/ an NPC.)

This is incorrect, I know for a fact that I picked up Xzar and Montaron,
dropped them off at the Nashkel carnival, went into the mines (where I
leveled up), came back to the carnival, and they had changed to level 6,
lost all the equipment I gave them, and Xzar learned completely different
spells (lost the spells from read scrolls).
