Hello,

When you first enter the Friendly Arm Inn (with just Imogen in you party),
in one of the out houses there is a women who askes you to recover her ring
from the Hobgoblins just north of the Inn. I've expored the entire Friendly
Arm Inn map, killed off all the Hobgoblins, but can't find the ring. I
haven't moved to the map north of the Inn, since it's down on the world map
as Baldur's gate. So where's the ring? (or am I missing something
obvious?).

thanks

Robin

There are two packs of hobs north of the compound, right along the
walkway. If you killed them all off, one of them should have had a
red and yellow ring called 'Joia's Flamedance Ring'. You may have
missed it among the dead body loot, or if you really blew one of the
hobs to chunks of flesh, it might have been destroyed (not sure if
this can happen to quest items).

It should be on a hobgoblin who is just above the north wall, if you walk along
the path you should find him.... the ring will have her name on it.... and why
do you just have imoen? You didn't take xzar and monteron?

It should have been on the body of one of the hobgoblins, in the northern
area of the FAI map. Go back up there and make sure you didn't miss any.

boundary of the city (on the same map)...apparently the Hobgoblin carrying
it is a different colour. I'm having many problems..but that wasn't one of
them! so it cant be too hard......are you sure you picked everything up,
sometimes when they die on top of each other its difficult to recognise two
treasure piles.
Good Luck

Robin may not have come across them! I know I didn't on my first attempt.
I only discovered them the 2nd time round!

should you even pick up xzar and monteron? they don't quite fit in with the
rest of my group which seems to be mostly good (and sane). whill they bring
down the rest of my group? possible make the others unhappy? and also, i'm
really new to this game and i'm wondering what the stats on weapons mean.
which is better a 1d8 sword or a 2d6 sword? what does the 2 the d and the 6
mean? the book doesn't say that i know of. thanks alot for any help.

I've never played *real* D&D but I have played other non-computerised
RPGish games and if I'm right (please feel free to correct me) a 'd8' is
a die with 8 sides, a 'd6' is a die with 6 sides ( am I right so far?).
Thus a (for example) sword which causes 2d6 damage will cause damage
equal to a random number calculated by the computer when simulating the
roll of 2 six sided dice. Ok? So (and this is when I start
speculating) if you want to know which is better (using your example), a
1d8 sword or a 2d6 sword you have to work out the range of possible
damage points possible. So for a 1d8 sword the minimum possible total
is 1 and the maximum (shock horror) is 8, thus the sword has possible
damage points of 1-8, simple enough? Similarly, for a 2d6 the minimum
possible total is 2 ( a 1 on each die) and the maximum is a 12 (a six on
each die), OK?

1d8 Sword = 1-8
2d6 Sword = 2-12

All this is based on the AD&D rules, and I suppose it could have been
simplified for the computer but the designers wanted to be as faithful
to the original rule set as possible.

Now, I could be completely wrong, so don't take this as gospel (as if
you would) and look out for the inevitable corrections which will ensue.

Hope this helps,
Tom AKA Herakles the Fighter, Athena the Mage ( and now the most recent
addition to my resume) Moriety the Thief (part of my new experimental
group of EVIL, muhahahahahah)

Hey, thanks alot. If you are right, and I assume you are, that makes
perfect sense. That makes it easy then- the highter the 2 numbers, the
better. That sounds simple enough... :) Thanks again. I greatly
appreciate it.

You may notice them sparring verbally with other NPCs, plus
if you push your reputation too high they may fight. I find the
verbal interplay quite interesting.

Purely based on damage, the 2d6 sword. Another thing that's
important is the Weapon Speed. Most of the swords have a
weapon speed of 6, while the halbard I'm using this time around
has a weapon speed of 9. In pen-and-paper ADND, for
determining the order of attacks you'd roll a ten-sided die and
add modifiers (weapon speed being one of them). There can
be advantages to (typically low-damage) low-weapon-speed
weapons, like daggers. It can be quite important in beating a
mage to the punch (or spell), though most people don't worry
about it too much. My halbard is s~l~o~w on the attack, even
though the animations play at the same speed.

2 (times) die 6 (sides). It's a holdover of sorts from
pen-and-paper RPGs, but works well for many
quantizations still. Roll two 6-sided dice. That works
out to 2-12 damage, with a large chance of the
damage rolled (or calculated) being somewhere in
the middle, with 2s and 12s very rare.

You're exactly right.

Also, hit points are based on dice as well. Mages HP's are "rolled" from a
four sided die, thieves from a six, clerics/druids/priests from an eight,
and fighters from a ten. Rangers used to be rolled from a 12, but I'm not
sure if this is still the case.
