Ive taken the Idol and the ancient armour to Ulcaster, but I didn't get
anything from him.
Thanks
Tony.

Have you got TOSC ??
I've not tried it, but I have heard that you can't do it without Tales of
the Sword Coast installed.

It's not bull.
Ryan
Every time, he took the armor, disappeared, and left me standing there with
that worthless idol.
And, yes, I have TOSC installed.

I assume you have the same character carrying both?? (I think I had the
lead character do it, i.e. the one chatting to Ulcaster's ghost).
Anyway, worked for me, although you have to persist in chatting several
times before he'll do it for/to you.

This sounds like you took the armor + idol to the ghosts in the Firewine
dungeon -- you need to take this loot to the ghost of Ulcaster who is
hanging around the ruins of his school on the Ulcaster Dungeon overland
map.
The Firewine Dungeon ghosts will just take the armor and split, leaving
you a few XPs.

From this newsgroup, of course! ;) I've never seen a hint or clue in the
actual game. It makes me wonder how the heck someone figured it out in the
first place, and what other kinds of things like this are in the game.

There are several ways to figure something like this out:
a) There are tools which let you see which NPC carries which item, or
at least from which NPC you can get a certain item. Gatekeeper shows
that the Vampiric Sword exists. So there is enough information to see
that the Ulcaster ghost has the Vampiric Sword. Then a bit of reverse
engineering might show how you can get it off him.
b) BG programmers often visit newsgroups and love to talk about their
game. One of them may have suggested sometime in the past to deliver
these items to the Ulcaster ghost.
c) There are tens of millions of people playing the game. Is it so
unlikely that one of these players did Ulcaster after he visited the
digsite and got the idol, and after he did Firewine and forgot to give
the Ancient Armor to the ghosts there? Most of these things are found
out by accident, you know.

The gravestone in Nashkell is the only one I have seen mentioned.

If you are talking about Easter Eggs, I suppose the following also
qualifies:
If you click on an NPCs portrait, he/she gives a canned response. If
you click again, you get another response. After a third different
response, it cycles back to the first. However, if you keep clicking,
after the cycle has gone round three times, suddenly new, sometimes
very funny responses appear.
