In Baldurs Gate 1, I found this while in the Nashkel Mines. Who and where
is Joseph might I ask?

There is a commoner, in one of the buildings in Nashkel (I believe
it's the small house off to the southeast on the main Nashkel map, near
the windmill), who is his wife. Talk to her, and she will want you to
bring back some news of Joseph - he has disappeared in the mines (one of
many, as people have no doubt been telling you) and not come back. This
ring is all that is left of him: bring it back to her for a small amount
of experience and possibly a reputation point.

Jonathan.

No reputation. You rarely get reputation boosts for bringing bad news.

unfortunately poor old Joseph has met his end in the mines, however if
you take his ring back to his wife ( she can be found in the locked
building in the south east corner of the Nashkel section) then you'll
get 800xp, not bad for a day's work.

There's a point in the game, if you hold onto the ring too long, I
guess, when it becomes impossible to locate said wife. This happened in
the game I'm currently playing (with ToSC), so I had no choice but to
sell the darned thing :(

Good luck,
Eric

I couldn't give the ring back to her. If I remember correctly, the party got
the xp and a reputation point for just telling her Joseph was dead.

In my current game, I'm about to enter the Cloakwood Mines. I've done
every quest up to that point, and explored every map area except for
Ulgoth's Beard (don't know how to gain access). When I went to the house
where Joseph's wife is supposed to be, all I find are a sleeping woman
and another figure (who tells me to leave). No sign of the wife anywhere.

Good luck,
Eric

I believe that other figure is Joseph's wife; I seem to recall that choosing the
wrong dialogue options in conversation with her prevents her from telling you
about the ring, and that she won't talk to you a second time.

I don't think it's influenced by how long you've been hanging onto the ring for.
But you do have to ask her for information about the mines, and if you've already
cleared them out completely by the time you first see her, you're less likely to
choose that option of your own accord, making it difficult to elicit the correct
dialogue accidentally.

Joseph's wife is labelled as "Commoner". She's not called "Joseph's Wife"
or anything like that. One needs to ask her about the mines to get the
mini-quest,
although it probably works if one just talks to her whilst holding the ring.
Still, it's incredibly unimportant and don't be too bothered if you mess
this up.
