Don't forget to spend your hard earned $$ on spells for your mages to
memorize, even if you won't use them. It takes a bit of book keeping to make
sure you're not buying things they don't already have, and often you need
Potions of Insight or Genius to get past their max spells/level, but you get
1000 exp times the spell level for each scroll you successfully transcribe.
With two or three mages in your party, a lame 4th level spell
protection-like spell can net you tons of EXP automatically for a few
hundred gold.

Don't forget that in BG2 the main area maps are now annotated with the
locations of most places of interest (and you can add your own notes).
