He's a great assassin from the shadow thieves.
If you choose to join bodhi instead of gaelan you'll have to kill him on the
docks.
He was not that hard to swallow when i meet him but the reasons were differents.
Anyway he carries a great throwing axe +3

If you go the evil path, he's a Shadow Thief who you kill with
Mook, and get a good throwing axe from.
If you go the good path, he's God. If you are allied with the
Shadow Thieves, and you turn against them before getting Imoen, then
the game can't continue, since you have no way of getting to Spellhold.
So Arkanis warps in and wipes you out. I don't think he's beatable.
(Prove me wrong, here!) Apparently, this also happens even after the
Shadow Thieves aren't any use to you anymore...

Ah, loyal, steadfast Jaheira, Jaheira and maple syrup, mmm, mmm..., oh,
yes, about Arkanis Gath, he's GAME OVER if you turn against the thief guild.
I cast a resilient sphere on my main character and then left him
outside while everyone else went into the guild to kill thieves. He
automatically appears next to my main character outside and then kills
him through the sphere. Talk about obvious.....

If you have done something that stops you being able to complete the game,
someone unbeatable appears and kills you. This happens even if you would
normally be able to kill that character without any problems.
For the Thieves' Guild quest, it is Arkanis Gath they use. However, in that
capacity, he is not the same character. He is just a way of killing you,
and there is no possible outcome to the fight other than you dying and
having to reload.
There is a point later on where a group of potential allies will
automatically kill you if you offend them, although it is evident that the
party would really be able to slaughter them like sheep, because if you do
not ally with them it is impossible to finish the game. This really annoys
me, because they act in an extremely offensive manner and I would really,
really, like to punch their leader in the face.
Unfortunately, if you do that, instant death results. I just have to be
content with thinking of a postscript to the game, in which I take him aside
from the celebrations, grab him by the hair, and slam him face first into a
table 30 or 40 times.

You can kill Elhan once you've opened up the Temple in the elven city. You
have to be quick though, because his script uses an "EscapeArea()" command
if he's attacked by "[GOODCUTOFF]" (i.e. CharName & Party). The "Elven War
Sage" is the one who kills Player1 if you attack the elves in the "Entrance
to the Underdark" map (he actually uses a script command:
"ApplySpell(Player1,WIZARD_IMPRISONMENT)" to Imprison the Protagonist). In
my evil game I attacked him then, but he escaped too soon.
Arkanis Gath wears what I call an Immortality Device. It's an amulet called
MINHP1, and while he's wearing it he can't be killed (not even with cheats).
A few other creatures wear this amulet as well. There is also another
Immortality Device called "Imoen's Belt", and it's worn by Imoen in Ch. 1
and a few other creatures (Haer Dalis' bard girl-friend wears one, for
instance)..
Other Show Stopper Creatures are Harpell Malchor (the abjurationist who
collects Drizzt's goods in Ch. 6) and (I think) an Arkanis-wannabe called
Zyntris who kills the party if you mess up the Maevar/Bloodscalp quest.
Not sure, but I'll bet there's another who will show up if you attack Bohdi
while you are working for her (or maybe Bohdi does the job herself).

I don't want to kill him, just kick his teeth in, which is not possible in
the game system. Or to tell him that, if he's going to take that attitude
towards a certain member of my party, he can get stuffed and his city can
stay in the hands of Irenicus. Again, can't do that, no such dialogue
option.
What is irritating about the "show-stoppers" is that they are so much less
powerful in their other capacities. Arkanis Gath is not particularly tough
normally, and the Elven War Sages are wimps when they are fighting on the
same side as the party.
