i'm trying to test out an idea and am wondering if anyone else has
tried this.

i want to dual my 5th level mage into a fighter
(stats:18,18,18,15,10,10).

My thinking here is that give my fighter a blunt mastery and mirror
image, he will be virtually unstoppable in melee. His AC won't matter
(though I think I can get it down to -1 (w/ring +2). Anyone else try
this?

Also when I first thought of this I tried a multiclass fighter/mage out
to see what weopon/armor he could use and still cast spells. I noticed
that he could not wear any armor (as I thought), but he COULD use a
large shield?????

I didn't think a a fighter/mage could use a shield and still cast
spells. Was I seeing things? Has anyone else there experienced this?

Thanks,

neal

Can do. You may find the Tome of Strength useful (19 Str
will let you do a lot of splatterings, in addition to being a major
step up from 18-plain), but onward...

He'll certainly have a good time, with the way Mirror Image is
implemented in Baldur's Gate. I usually go the other way around
(fighter, then mage), but it'll work. If you really wanted a low
AC and you're prepping for a big fight, pull off your armor for
a moment and cast mirror image, then slap it back on and charge.
Note that you need to eclipse your wizard level to regain your
abilities, but I think you know that...

It's the way it's implemented in Baldur's Gate. You can't wear
body armor, but you can use a shield...take it as you will.
As a sidenote, why blunt weapons? Personal preference? I
decided I wanted to wield a halberd, then remembered in
hindsight that not only is it slow, but there aren't many magical
polearms in the game...

It's my second time through and I noticed a couple things. That most of
the big narly guys where some kind of plate, which has a -3 or -4
adjustment on your thaco. But not to blunt weopons. One way of looking
at this modification is that a blunt weopon give you an addition 3 to 4
thaco modifier. Make the +2 hammer into a +2 damager, +5 thaco
modifier. like that.

plus i just like the idea of hammering people with my mace or hammer.
probably goes back to Excaliber when those nights at the end fight.
When they were hit with swords they didn't look like they felt it, but
when what's his name goes around swinging his mace, they fell, and fell
hard.

Thanks for the answers. Knew pretty much about the shield, but like the
verification. I take it D&D doesn't work this way?

Mhm - Wolf cave, plus some other place in Chapter 5 or 6. I
seem to have lost or sold it somewhere when I dual-classed to
mage, though, and I'm currently toting Imoen's short-sword +2
(mastered in short sword for throwing daggers) in lieu.
Whee, chunks!

I found a +1 halberd twice (two separate games, and in the same place).

5 or 6, that means you should have the halbard + 2, right?

Also, check out the short sword of poision or venom or whatever it is. It's
+2, with an additional 2-8 poision damage for 2 rounds (details sketchy, but
it has unlimited uses, and is fantastic.
