I played the original BG but can't remember the details of how the
experience cap worked with multi-class characters.

Does anyone know how exactly the 2.95 million XP cap works with multi-class?
That is, if I am a half-elven thief-mage, does that mean I can only get
1.475 million XPs in each class, i.e. 16th level thief, 13th level mage MAX,
instead of 23rd level thief, 17th level wizard. I am thinking that this is
the way it works but can't remember for sure.

Also, what a about a dual-classed human? Would it be possible for me to
become a 17th level wizard and then switch to a thief and then become a 23
level thief. (I know the game probably isn't that big, but if I was really
determined I am sure I could kill enough kobolds :)

Basically, the XP cap is absolute - you can only have 2.95m XP shared
between all of your classes, however you get them.

There are tools available to remove the XP cap if, like many players,
you find it spoils gameplay for no good reason. Check the old posts and
you're bound to find details if you want them.

AFAIK yes you could, but you would have to remove the Xp cap first (as
otherwise you would never be able to overtake the original wizard
level achieved)
