Sounds like fun.

I've tried games with some small subset of people (2 or 3 max, say). In my
experience they are an order of magnitude easier than a solo game if you
aren't reloading, so your "too scared to solo" suggestion is on target. If
Immy or Sarey die you can easily bring 'em back. Since you'll have the PC
as the main fighter for most of the game, however, you still have to worry
about the protagonist losing it. :-)
Have fun!

I prefer two characters to soloing. Currently, I'm trying a multi
fighter/thief and playing him and Jaheira though from BG1 to TOB. I figure
the complete lack of mage spells should make for an interesting game.

My other problem has been that BG2 seems to have a lot more traps and if I
solo without thief skills, I can't see any way of disarming the trap without
stepping on it and taking the hit points. Anyone who can give me a clue as
to how to solve this one would be greatly appreciated.
What I plan to do is start as a thief (everyone in Candlekeep said Immy and
I were thick as thieves) and dual to a kensai after I get to BG2. at around
thief level 8 or 9.

BTW: Playing an assassin has been the most fun I've had with this game so
far. Especially once I started getting my special abilities.

(uses a bit of prior knowledge) In my Solo R/C Game, I'd cast Shield of the
Archons (after I leveled that high, of course), Death ward, Protection from
Electricity and then just walk on it. (Might pay to use DUHM, and/or Potion
of Fortitude if you've low HP.) Maybe I'm lucky, but I never died once.
(From traps, anyway...)
If you're a Mage, (minor) Spell Deflection and Reflection (IIRC) will
protect you from spells aimed at you (not cloud effects, of course). (You
can 'recharge' your spells without resting (up to lvl4, I think) using one
of these spells and getting hit by traps on purpose - but it's safer to
rest.)
And the neutral familiars all have thief skills. (I think the highest lvl
thief/most useful is the ferret - True Neutral at 75% find traps can't
remember pick locks). Not 100% sure. Of course, you have to be the right
class..
And of course, if all else fails - summons.
Hope this helps,
Liam

That's how I feel, too. I'd also include Jaheira (old, loyal friend)
and Sarevok (I feel responsible for him after raising him) in my list
of "must haves". ;)

You could spells and/or summons to soak up the damage ... but it's
rather crude compared to a thief's skills (and yields no experience,
either).

Without using Shadowkeeper or similar editors, you cannot dual *into*
a kit, only *out of* it. Meaning: kensai -> thief is possible while
thief -> kensai is not.
It's a bit of a drag, since I don't play single-class spellcasters (a
Bhaalspawn should be able to hold her own in combat IMO), but would
like to play (dualled) wild mage.

I have no problem at all using Shadowkeeper to make my fighter/thief a
fighter/wild mage. I like the idea that my professional warrior/amateur
mage fumbles spells.
Surrounded by trolls, I cast a fireball, only to find myself surrounded by
trolls and hiccupping violently. "Bloody hic hell," I mutter, reaching for
my longsword ...

I think if I play a solo game game, I'd have few objections to this,
myself. Hmm. Solo with a thief/wild mage multi or swashbuckler/mage
dual?

BTW, when I whipped up a quick test character, I noticed that while
using Shadowkeeper to change the newly-dualled mage to a wild mage did
give her the three wild magic spells, she does not gain the extra
spell per level that a specialist mage is supposed to get. Any idea
how to fix that, or would I have to fiddle with the available slots
manually after each level-up?

I just treated it as part of the penalty for a minor bit of cheating. Last
night I restarted my solo game (again) with a pure assassin. Those poisoned
arrows work wonders against anything in the first dungeon and the circus.
But I know she'll be slaughtered when she hits that first big fight in the
slaver ship compound. That's ususally where my solo/no reloads games break
down.

Argh! How can you solo an Assassin! :-) The 15% in thieving points
per level are murderous...

Easiest way to tackle the slaver's house boat is to take the front
door and not the sewer entrance -- by the time you reach Cap. Haeglin
he should be all alone (or have just one lackey).

I just found out I couldn't. She got killed in the circus tent. Three times.
Normally, I've been starting a new character after the first death but she
went down so fast, I wanted to see if I could beat them.
I'm shooting for a no-reload by going through the types one at a time until
I find one that can survive. Thief skills seem to be a necessity but then I
get my but kicked when I have to fight.
I've got a bad feeling I'll eventually learn an Undead Hunter is the only
character I can solo with. That seems to be the only character type I have
any natural empathy for. With anything else I feel like I'm playing a
character, but with the Undead Hunter, I feel like I'm being myself. :> If I
knew a way to beat traps with him, I'd jump straight to him.

I'll have to try that. I was hoping to sneak through the slaver compound
but it hasn't worked yet. So far, my no-reload solo efforts have resulted in
playing the game to that point over and over again.
