Where does Throne Of Bhall start?

I have played through BG2 once and I then lost my saved character file, so
I'm
playing through it again before I can get my hands on TOB. But does Throne
of
Bhall start after you have killed Irenicus or is it just extra areas in the
middle part
of the game where you are free to roam around the map anywhere?

It's after you kill Irenicus. In fact, you go to new areas and you
will not be able to go back to the map of BGII.
