SPOILERS

I've been racking (wracking?) what's left of my brain and I can only
remember one of the other things (you need 4). This was an awkward
puzzle as you can't keep going back and getting repeats of the clues
without reloading a saved game. (I didn't think of checking to see if
they got recorded in the journal???). I think that as soon as you have
any of the items it starts treating it as an attempt to locate it in
the right pipe and starts attacking you if your choice was wrong.

There was one clue about a friend. It sound a bit like you have to
kill one of your party members, but no..... there's someone else down
there who tells you all about his friend... maybe you could get an
item there....

And the other item was.... ahhh bugger it I just can't recall..
sorry.. but it must have been fairly easy to find as I already had it
when I got to the pipes. It was the hand I had to go and search for.
All items were on the same map, if that's a help. I have a vague
feeling that one of the Kobolds had it - try up that dead end???

**Spoilers dead ahead, take cover!**

After getting the ring and the hand, you need a staff and the blood of
a friend. The staff is held by the kobold shaman who is in the
passage to the north of the bridge in the sewers, along with a cohort
of kobolds and commandoes. Kill them and loot the staff from his body
(so don't gib the shaman!). The blood of a friend comes from Quallo's
friend, the lovely cuddly carrion crawler. Again, in true BG fashion,
the way to get the item is to kill the creature, which has the
unfortunate (but necessary) side effect of making Quallo very unhappy
(well, how would you feel if your friend got killed in front of your
eyes?). Get all four items, go to the room with the pipes and click
each one once. This will yield a little cryptic description of what
each pipe wants. IIRC, the order (from top to bottom) is; ring,
blood, hand, staff. Also, Quallo will give you more clues if you get
stuck. HTH.

SPOILER

Did you find the room with the pipes?

If so (and you have the items) it's just a matter of clicking on the
pipes in the right order. Which of course means clicking on the wrong
pipe, getting zapped, reloading, etc. It's actually a pretty tedious
puzzle as it's hard to remember which cryptic clue went with which
pipe. Save and reload and retry is the way to go...

Wimp. ;)

my character tried, got zapped, took his punishment and got them in the
right order without reloading.

If you speak to the guy with the carrion crawler after you've got the
various bits, he'll give you some cryptic clues as to which order to take,
but as you say, even if you figure it out, it's still difficult to remember
which order the pipes are in (I suppose this would have been a good point to
use map notations, in retrospect).

Or, conversely, you could use a bit of logic. Remember that the sewer guy
tells you which goes first, which goes last and which one isn't third.
Well, that should tell you everything you need to know.

Good luck!

There's no reason to kill the kobold shaman, and gibbing doesn't destroy
important items.

Killing him seemed the only choice when he wouldn't engage in
dialogue, other than telling me to go jump :-(. And gibbing has
destroyed objects before, it just depends on how important they are to
the plot as to whether they survive. The motto is hit the enemy until
he has -1 hitpoints, not -50 ;-)

Well, what was your charisma? And did you talk to him before or after
reading the riddles on the pipes?
It's not like you can really decide how much damage you do to someone..

Charisma is at 18, thanks to the ring of human influence. And I
talked to him before entering the pipe room, but after speaking to
Quallo, since I did the sewers back to front, entering from the slaver
guild. Oh, the gibbing bit was a joke. Just you try and stop Minsc
when he gets the bit between his teeth ;-).
