Despite cheating and boosting my thiefs pick-pocketing skill to 280 I
am unable to steal from this guy. I've had 13 attempts at the blade of
roses but to no avail. Am I missing something vital?!?!

This is strange. I can pickpocket Bernard just fine, and in fact, I
stole jsut abou everything of value he had for sale. It did take me
some reloads, as sometimes he discovered my larceny, but it certainly
is not impossible to steal from him. Strange.

THat sounds very cool. I never stole anything in BG1 or 2. Once my
assasin gains a higher level copuple more mage levels he can streal
again.

Did you sell the stuff back to him? And then steal it back and well
you see where I am going?! (:

That's a possibility, they might be using bytes to store the
information.

Pickpocketing is one of the great pluses to having a Bard. =)
I pickpocket *everyone* before talking to them. And stealing
9th level scrolls is a great way to save money. What sucks
though is that there are NO good items that you can only get
by pickpocketing... (or killing the person, of course) You
can pickpocket the Helm of Glory, Ring of the Ram, a Demon
Heart... but it's all stuff that you'll get normally through
quests, or people will just give it to you. The only good
thing I've found that non-thieves won't get is a second Ring
of Regeneration from the Adv. Mart shopkeeper... 'Cause even
evil characters wouldn't want to kill him. =)

One improvement over BG1 though is that 90% of the people in
BG2 have at least a few gold pieces or a gem on them, while
in BG1 80% of the people had absolutely nothing on them.

You can only sell stolen items back to thieves, like the one
selling stuff in the sewers.

You don't know the fun you're missing. :) I always play a thief/mage first
time through and never buy anything I can get for free.

Most shopkeepers don't accept stolen goods, but there's at least one
exception. That was where I got the gold to buy everything from Adventurers'
Mart, at the start of Chapter 2. The only downside to this little exercise
was that it seemed a bit pointless to pick up items for sale after that.

Hmm, my pickpockets was at 160 or so, and I cleaned Bernard out.
However, if you find that he's catching you, try this little trick to
keep Bernard sweet (found on a walkthrough at www.gamefaqs.com, so I
can't take credit for discovering it)...

*spoiler*

When you pickpocket someone, keep your finger over the space bar. If
you don't succeed, then immediately hit space, even before the screen
changes back to the game view from the buy/sell screen. You should
find the game paused with the shopkeeper still blue (not hostile).
Then click on him to initiate dialogue, and he won't turn red and
attack you, thus preserving your reputation and letting you try and
steal from him again. For other applications of this trick, use your
imagination ;-).
