underdark you get a ridiculous amount of money. It is something like
15368303 gp. When you want to buy it back from the Svirnl.....(dwarf looking
fellow in the village), it's only 1050 gp.
No more money trouble for me!

Are you by any chance using an unpatched version of the game? That sounds
like you might have been hit by a Nishruu/Hakeashar who tried to drain
your magic items.
In early versions of the game, those creatures would actually drain the
items "below" zero, which would wrap around at 65535, so the items had
tons and tons of charges, making them very valuable to merchants. But the
item, being a daily-recharge type, probably reset itself to its normal
value of 1 after the sale.

Possibly in the fight against the drows near the iron globe thing?
