The Gamespot guide says that after the Balor, elemental
and "free my son" quests I'm to go back to the globe area
and then west to meet with the dragon who can get me into
Drow city. I find no dragon. Instead I get into an area with
some beholders and a lot of lizardlike Kua-Toa or something.
There is a Demogorgon statue and some tadpoles, and a KuaToa
King that can't be killed...
Anyone have some hints for that area?
Anyone know where the dragon is?

Read the journal. Or head up North, when your walking on the road to Ust
Natha go right for the city, left for the dragon.

Don't forget the smiley! There are people out there
that can't take a written joke.
In the main Underdark area (that's east of the kuo-toa). For the
kuo-toa prince, take the tainted tadpoles from the pool, run past the
Prince and put the tainted tadpoles in the main pool on the other side
of him. Then summon a beastie and have it walk in front of the
Demogorgon statue (be ready for a big fight), as doing so will get you
important loot. Then go back to the main Underdark area and look for a
Dark Cave (which will show up under that name on the map).
Well, first of all when you defeat the Balor be sure to go talk to the
Svirfneblin King because he gives you an item that even allows you access to
the Dragon's Lair. Actually, I don't think he even mentioned it's a Dragon
at all, he just calls her, "The Lady." In any event, to find the Dragon you
need to go to the NorthEast corner of the map. In other words, when you
exit the Svirfneblin village via their little bridge, be sure to keep
turning left at every possible intersection and you will ultimately end up
in the NE corner of the map. But if you don't have the light gem from the
Svirfneblin King as your reward for defeating Balor then you won't find the
entrance to the Lady's lair.

Imprisoned Mage
When you very first entered the Underdark there is a little camp of dwarven
merchants a tad to the East of that spot. I think they are Duergar
merchants. Recall you first entered the Underdark in the SouthEast corner
of the map. If you talk to all 3 merchants one relates a tale of an
outsider who was defeated in a mage battle just to the north of the
merchant's camp. If you walk north about a stone's throw and cast a
"freedom" spell you will release an imprisoned mage who has a quest for you.
The Svirfneblin's Lost Son
A bit further north of the duergar merchants than the Imprisoned Mage you
encountered some hostile Drow, including 1 or 2 Drow priestesses. In that
area they are found in, there is an unusual structure that looks like a
merry-go-round device. It is some kind of magical prison. If you click on
the portals you will release the prisoners. For some reason the poor
Svirfneblin son is one of them. There are several others as well.
The Kuo-Tua Caves
These are to your immediate west when you exit the Svirfneblin village
across their little bridge. Be wary of exploring this area too far if you
already talked to The Lady because you might leave the Underdark and have
your Drow illusion dispelled, thus you won't be able to enter the Drow City
in disguise after that. There is good experience and great treasure here.
The SouthEastern Area
In the SE corner of the Underdark map there are Eastern and Southern
Tunnels. One leads to the Beholder lair and one leads to an Illithid lair.
These are very worthwhile to explore but tough battles. The Beholder lair
is a kill/pillage affair and there are some important items there, one for a
quest and one for an artifact. The Illithid lair is more involved.
