I've used the Breach spell several times on enemy mages protected by
Protection vs Normal missiles and or Protection vs Magic Weapons. The spell
has absolutely no effect. The mages protections are still in effect. Am I
missing something here? I've read the spell descriptions several times and
am stumped as to why there is no effect. Any ideas people?

I'm pretty sure that some enemies have protection spells that protect
against anti-protection spells (if that makes any sense). In this case,
you'll need to cast an anti-protection spell against protection spells that
are designed against anti-protection spells. Makes sense?

In other words, use one of those spells that will dispel a protection spell
8th level and higher. "Breach" doesn't work against some higher level
spells.

You may need to cast one of the following first: Secret Word, Pierce
Magic, Warding Whip, or Ruby Ray of Reversal. Read the appropriate spell
descriptions to find out how powerful a spell is necessary for your
situation.

Higher level mages such as liches have spell trap on them. You will need to
use ruby ray of reversal first.

A lot of liches trigger their protection spells with Spell Trap. Knock that
down first with a few higher level spells then hit them with Breach.

I've tried out thist theory with a Stoneskin and a Spell Trap on my main
character.
Edwin could take the Stoneskin off with Breach straight away.

My guess is that the mage in question probably had Improved Invisibility on
him.
If that's the case, use Invisibility Purge or True Sight etc. first.

It's often kinda hard to see if the guy is "invisible" when he's got all
those glowing globes around him.

No need for that. But you have to use Detect invisibility... thats my
experience anyway (with liches) since all of them tend to cast their
defences and then improved invisibility. (you can see them kind of
transparent when they attack but you cant target them with magic) Then
breach works like a charm ;)

Having a thief around with high Detect Illusions skill and the Thief
Adventurer script (always detect traps when not carrying out orders) saves
on a lot of illusion/invisibility detection spells. Jan works well in this
capacity.

He's probably invisible, check for the scrolling message "Can't target
sanctuaried or invisible creatures". Use True Sight or Invisibility Purge
first. Since Minsc can cast 2nd level cleric spells, I usually use him to
cast the invisibility purge, since he's right there anyway.
