In my opinion, no. You'll most likely find other, more powerful weapons (+3
or more) in due time.

Are there any other constitution-boosting items? My axe-wielding dwarf with
19 CON would like to have the regeneration option. On the other hand, he's
currently able to use a magical shield and the +2 AC Defender axe, so he'll
take an AC hit switching to Lonesome Road, so I'm not sure if it's worth it.

* You must be out of your brilliant minds
Sure it would be! Who says that your dwarf can only have one axe?
I'd pull out the Lonesome Road when walking around, but as soon as a serious
fight started, switch to the improved AC!
Of course, if AC had anything to do with saving throws (traps, etc.) I might
reconsider such an approach. Since it doesn't there's no downside other
than losing one weapon slot, a big wad of cash, and having to remember to
switch back and forth.

Yes, its hard to find as good two hander axes (tho there is one random
I found that is nearly the same, but its random afaik).
But be sure to install the patch, cause without the Lonsome Road can
cause some bugs that destroy game balance.

Only if you have one character dedicated to Axe weilding. It's one of the
better ones in the game. Otherwise, don't bother with it. Too expensive and
you'll find other weapons on par or better pretty soon.

Yup. I just gave a potion of constitution to my dwarf and boosted up his CON
to 20. I just don't remember where I picked it up, sorry. But it was before
I went to Severed Hand. It's more than likely that I found it Vale of Shadows.
Aargh, what a rotten memory I have...

Your ranger would be better off with a large sword, since he gets an extra
attack per round with 1-handed swords to simulate the ranger double-weapon
ability. I hadn't realised this (I knew about the double weapon ability but
thought it applied to all 1-handed weapons) so I put all my ranger's points
into maces and hammers (plus crossbow) and have only just got him
specialised in large swords now. I'll RTFM next time.
That axe is good, though - my dwarven fighter uses it and a magical shield,
which gives him -5 AC while weilding it.

How would that be? I havent got the patch yet, but I have just gotten
the lonesome road - no bugs seen so far.
As to the patch, the link from BG chronicles for the UK patch doesnt
work for me :( Any idea on where there may be a different mirror
site to use?

I had to sell almost everything bar the kitchen sink (everything
without a good use anyway :) to buy this and the newly available
spells after dragons eye. Managed to scrape enough up to keep my wand
of armouring, but sold my sleep wand :(
From the bug-fix list in the Patch105.txt file:
- Lonesome Road and other CON-raising items will no longer give a healing
side effect when unequipped and then re-equipped.
I would guess that when equipping and unequipping it, you would retain the
bonus hit-points, or something like that.
Incidentally, on a related subject, the patch notes also say that it fixes a
problem with losing bonus spells when unequipping the sanctified warhammer.
I've just got that hammer, and if my cleric unequips then re-equips it, she
has to re-memorise the bonus spells. Is this how it's meant to work, or is
that the problem that was supposed to be fixed? I do have the patch
installed.

* There's Klingons on the starboard bow - scrape 'em off, Jim!
I loaded the v 1.05 patch from
http://interplay.com/icewind/index.html acouple of days ago
without any problems. Theres a link in there 'What's New' section
dated 07.21.00 that worked effectively.

What it would do is this--say you have a max of 100 hp, but a current HP of 70.
You equiped Lonesome Road, rasing your CON by 1, and giving you say.....+10
HP. Max HP is now 110, current is now 80. You unequip it and your max goes
back down to 100, but your current stays at 80. Do it again and you'll gain
another 10 current HP....again and again until you're completely healed. With
the patch, when you unequip it, both your max and current hp drop back to what
they were before you equiped it.

Without the patch, when you unequiped the Sanctified Warhammer, it would
un-memorize ALL of your first and second level cleric spells. It was a pain in
the arse to say the least. Glad they fixed this.
I thought it must be something like that. So, if you had 10HPs before
equipping the axe, got another 10 as your CON bonus and were then hit for 12
points of damage, would you then die if you un-equipped it?

Ah - hence why I saw nothing :)
My dwarf went from 19 to 20, so just saw the regen - which is nice for
a total heal when resting, but probably not as useful in a fight as
the extra +10 or so you get going from 18 - 19.
