I went down to the Lower Reaches through Ghoul Town, assembled the device,
and killed the Unseeying Eye. Now, I can't get the hell out of here. The way
I came in is blocked off ("It's much to steep to climb back up"), and the
only way out is a magically locked hidden door that I don't have the key
for. I've been scavenging throught the entire area, but I can't find a way
out or a key to let me out that door!

The door that leads back onto the corridor you went along earlier to get
down to the old temple? And you've just gone up the stairs from the
place you killed the Unseeing Eye, and are now on the other side of it?

When you pass it for the first time, it's unopenable. Coming up the
stairs from the beholder lair, you should be able to open it from
this side with no problems.

If that's the case, and the door won't open, you may have found a bug.
There isn't a key, because you're not supposed to need one.

You can't actually open it - not in the normal way.
But, when you walk close to it should automatically open.

I'm not sure exactly where you're stuck. Are you still in the
Beholder caves? (Or if not, can you get back into the Beholder cave?)
If so, there are 2 exits out of those caves. The one is on the far
left where I assume you came in. The other is towards the lower
middle. IIRC, that leads to the sewers, and once you're in the sewers
you can either go back into the cult area or head out to the Temple
area.

That was exactly it. I must have run into a bug, because walking close to it
didn't help, and trying to open from that side didn't help. Oh well, I
eventually just gave up and cheated. I had to go research how to alter my
baldur.ini file and I changed my location manually to the area I was already
in, only it put me at the beginning entrance of the area instead of in the
same place. That's the one reason I can think of to cheat... getting around
a bug.
