No, you do not need her. She is one more char telling you "go
east young man, go east..." (Btw, I do not know what happen if
you were to take her.)
If you cannot get into BG City, you did _not_ clear all locales
yet.

You do not have to bring Faldorn along. I've certainly never done so in the
past. By now you also might have met Eldoth (a bard) and Coran (a
fighter/thief) in Cloakwood. You'll soon meet another NPC (a dwarf). Now
while both Faldorn and the dwarf might seem rather crucial to your quest,
the truth is that you can play the game however you like, with whatever NPCs
you want, and it makes no real difference.

You'll be able to go to the city of Baldur's Gate after you've been through
Cloakwood - and if you've just met Faldorn you're only halfway through.

You do not need Faldorn at all. Keep searching east a couple of areas
for the Iron Throne mines.
