Algernon's Cloak too powerful?

The description of Algernon's cloak states, that it will raise the charisma
score of the wearer by 2. This is acceptable, I think, but the ability to
cast Charm Monster at will seems a bit too powerful. I just tried abusing it
in the Peldvale area, and soon found myself with a small army of followers
including Hobgoblins, Black Talon Elite, War Dogs, Huge Spiders, Bandits,
Bears, Gibberlings, and Squirrels.
This charm spell (or spell like effect) causes the victim to make a saving
throw vs. Breath Weapon(!?!), or be permanently charmed, until attacked by
another friendly.
A regular Charm spell would wear off in time, but this one doesn't.

What are your findings and opinions of this item? Too powerful? A cheat?

Actually I hadn't seen that function yet....But it does sound like the item
is a bit too powerfull...I don't think I'll be using it like that - Too
boring!

Never used myself, so I wouldn't know, but still, it's not like you can take
them from one area to another, and it doesn't work against higher level
enemies either
I don't think

I used it extensively in a solo game till the bandit camp, which I finished
without being hit once. Then I stopped to use it. It just wasn't fun.

So yes, I think it's really too powerful. It would have been vastly nicer
if it had say 20 charges instead of near infinity.

On the other hand, my daughter loves to charm dogs and wolves and play
with them.

??? Seems to me that the charm disappears after some (many) hours.

Do what i did. Roll yourself a d100
Take the number and change the cloak charges to this number. Make sure you
forget the amount it was, and you will soon solve that problem

They made a movie out of it?!
When I first saw the name Algernon, that story was the first thing that
popped into my mind

It all depends on how you use the cloak. If you use it on every NPC you
encounter, of course it's kind of a cheat. But if you use it as if it had
charges (just to placate someone you've failed to pickpocket or to charm
one or two bears to travel with you), it's a good item to have. In short:
if you think it's too powerful, don't use its charm ability... it's you
playing the game, and if you don't like a certain "feature" it's up to
you whether or not you take advantage of it.

Or a d40, like the Nymph Cloak made in Sorcerous Sundries.

Algernon's version is way too powerful no doubt, with 65K charges and
works from a distance. It would have done game balancing lots of good
by making this one exactly the same way as the Nymph Cloak.

BTW, the charm does wear off, after 10 turns or so.

I'm just curious why they called it Algernon's Cloak, I should re-read
the stuff on it (If it's the same one I have.)

Algernon (from my knowledge) was a mouse's name in "Flowers for

Algnernon" or "Charlie" - (The movie's title). He was a mouse that had
testing done on him to make him smarter.

It works fine on high level enemies - makes the battle at the iron
throne very simple.

Sounds like a good idea, but how do I do that?
Help appreciated.

To use the special abilities of certain items (like cloaks) you have to
click on the 'satchel' icon at the bottom of the main screen. It'll be
greyed-out if you've got nothing useable on you. Then just click the cloak
icon that comes up.

yea, it's a really old movie, like early-mid 70's. We watched it in
English Class back in Grade 9. I don't know which book you had, but on
the cover of ours, was a picture of a man and lady by a beach or water's
edge. Thats straight from the movie.

Not surprisingly, Algernon has it. He is on the first floor of Feldpost's
Inn in Beregost. He's the fat guy wandering about all the rooms up there,
claiming them all to be his own.
Pick his pockets.

If you're anything but Lawful Good, kill him. His territorial claiming of
all the rooms, and his antisocial insulting behavior should justify it :-]
