That happened the first time I found Suldanessellar. I suspect those
elves are now on the other side of the illusory entrance. I stopped
by the elven warcamp before returning to the Forest of Tethir;
unsurprisingly, the elven general did not offer another group of
elves to accompany me. It increasingly appears that "Move to Area"
is the only solution to my problem. Can anyone offer an alternative?

No, the only item you need is the Lanthorn.

MoveToArea will spawn your party in the top-left of the map, so you'll
need to ctrl-j them back to the entrance.

Hrm, he shouldn't even be there as he accomponies you to Suldanessellar
also...

How are you trying to get there? You can never get to Suldanessellar
directly from the world map, you have to go to the Forest of Tethir and
walk up one of the fallen trunks... but it sounds like you know this
already.
