I asked this question within another thread, but I don't think anyone
saw it.

What determines your success in pickpocketing the ghost knights in the
Firewine/Gullykin dungeon? Ability?

Is it luck?

Pickpocketing ability. But I think you have to go in from the firewine
end to catch them with the bow .. several times I started from the
Gullykin entrance(s) and none of them had anything on them.

I don't have their old armour .. I got it made into 'Vampires Revenge',
just for kicks..

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh!!! Now I'm told. Do I have a savegame
before firewine? NO! Do I have the extra longbow? NO!

No - the question was what determines whether you can successfully
pickpocket them or not. There was no question about which side you
enter from (duh, it's the same map)

To Aimee:

A 100-side dice is rolled against your thief's pick pockets skill.
If the roll is less, the attempt succeds, if it is greater, the attempt
fails. By "true" AD&D rules, a second roll is required to determine if
the attempt was noticed (an attempt might fail but not be noticed, or it
might succeed and still be noticed), however Baldur's Gate did not
implement this.

In short, it is luck modified by ability.

Well, the damn thing is not there in the patched version of TOSC that I am
playing. Yes I started playing the game _after_ installing the TOSC patch.

I have just completed the maze [Firewine --> Gullykin] and acquired a
decent bow.
I am playing with Bioware's 'final' patch.
I did have to repeat the pickpocket operation quite a few times though -
gradually ruling out individuals when I got the 'has nothing of value'
message.

Yes, but do you have TOSC, and the patch for that, installed?
