Well, its harder ( in XP points ) to become a Ranger because of some
characterictics:
1.- You cannot be ( as a fighter can be ) from a bad alignment. That
increases the difficulty but...
2.- You must have certain points on CHAR, STRE & CON. Better chances to
hit, and more things
3.- You have the ability of talking with animals ( in the game is
changed by the spell).
But in the paper & pencil game you can too
1.- Hide in the shadows
2.- Find footsteps
And some more things I've forgotten.. ( sorry ) :'-(
I would like to be of some help.

They are mainly overlapping, but not exactly the same. For instance
Call lightning and Good Berries are special to druids. Spiritual
hammer and Animate Dead are special to clerics. But it isn't mentioned
in the manual. So a ranger/cleric can cast Good Berries?

I'm pretty sure Rangers can use stealth in BG, so long as they're not
wearing heavy armour.

They can use boots, they can't use shadow armour.

They have a Stealth rating, but I don't think they can use the
Thief's magical gear (boots of stealth, shadow armour).

Depends on your definition of a backstab. In the AD&D RPG rules
system, thieves gets a damage multiplier when they attack someone
from behind, provided certain conditions are met (I'm not sure
what they are, exactly). A good RPG rules system gives out a to-hit
bonus when you attack someone from behind, regardless of
circumstances,
but I don't know if AD&D does this, or if it's implemented in BG.
If it is, and as a general rule, not a thief-specific rule, then
rangers can "backstab", in a way. But thieves would still get
the damage multiplier.

No. I've heard an invisible bard can, but never tried by myself.

I belive that Bards can backstab under the AD&D 2nd Edition rules.
Whether or not it's implemented in BG...?

I just checked this with Eldoth. A level 6 bard can triple-backstab
with "The whistling Sword (+2, short sword)" out from invisibility.

I can confirm this now. And I'm not complaining too :-).
