Imoen is for neutral or good parties. Montaron can also be used for evil or
neutral parties. Basically, Imoen is the best thief of the 3, then Safana.

I usually get her around level 2. So that I can mold her. She is just a
couple of (game) days ahead of Imoen (2k xp). I dual her to mage. (Tome of
Intelligence). Used in this way, she can be as good as Imoen and a "little"
more talkative. Try to get Coran too. She really can hurt his feelings.

I don't know about anyone else, but how could you let a personality like
that go to waste? Who knows what sort of vicious creatures out there in the
Sword Coast may be taken advantage of by her... erm, I mean, what sort of
vicious creatures out there in the Sword Coast would take advantage of her.
Seriously, she's not the best thief you'll find, IMHO (Imoen is probably the
best), but makes a useful backup, and can be dual classed to mage (can't
remember if she needs the tome of intelligence to up her intelligence to 17,
though). In between Imoen and Coran, you wouldn't need another thief, so
she's not all that essential. She does however give you details of a quest
on the map where you find her, which can yield more XP than you would ever
believe.

(I do it with lvl 1 chars) Keep up to the north edge of those screens. They
are relative safe. When you arrive on the lighthouse map go to the middle of
the screen. (Never bother with coordinates myself) When you don't do her
quest, she will complain (once, but I have char 18) but never leaves.
