I have tried to not fight them by talking but although some responses keep
Torgal talking longer in the end it's a fight and I get creamed. I still
have the dog stew but although he talks about getting fed I cannot find a
way to offer it to him. Can I talk him out of a fight? If not what's the
best approach to the battle?

I believe he will always fight. I'm pretty sure as I tried it a few times to
see the different conversation options. My best advice for this is to keep
the rest of your party back in the adjoining room, with their backs against
the far wall in a semi-circle. Summon a few monsters/animals and place them
by the door. Also, have Yoshimo set a greater snare in the doorway. Walk one
character through the door and just close enough to initiate conversation
with Turgol and then quickly bring that character back with the others. Now
cast haste on the group. As soon as Turgol and his buddies hit the snare
trap and summoned monsters cast slow on the trolls or just start to wail
away on them with acid and fire arrows. Turgol is usually in front so he
should take the brunt of the fire arrow damage. Once he manages to kill your
summoned creatures run your best tank character up to him to stop him one
more time. A few more arrow shots from the others and he'll go down no
problem.
The other trolls are easier. Aganazzer's Scorcher, Magic Missiles, and Flame
Arrows, should do away with them pretty easily. Cone of Cold seems to do
nice damage on them as well.
Good Luck!

I did this battle by running my theif into the room while hiding in shadows.
Torgal initiated the conversation, and then turned red and was able to see my
stealth'ed guy. He ran back out of the room, and Torgal (but not his two
bodyguards) followed - right into Minsc and Keldorn and a bunch of magic
missles. After he was done, I went in and got the two giant trolls. Worked
pretty well, considering I was counting on seeing about 20 trolls in the room!
Hope this helps as well.
I scouted the area with Minsc hidden first but TorGal can smell you so
I reloaded. Then I entered the room but didn't leave the steps right
inside the door. Cast some summoning spells to put some distance
between the two giant trolls and myself [plus the fire elemental just
looks awesome]. Cast cloud kill right at the edge of the fog of war
and much to my surprise TorGal took 4 damage and then died from the
couldkill. It didn't to squat to the other two but he died instantly.
Joy!!!
Nalia actually went into her speech about beating the quest before I
even realized that the spell was that effective.
The snake-thing [yuan-ti?] mage was hardest battle on that quest for
me.

P.S. you have to sneak past the Umbers to the cell with the dog bones
and put the pot of dog in that pile and they'll come a runnin'.
