why are xzar and montaran leaving?
i've been nursing them to high levels
cured their curses
given them the finest weapons and spells
and suddenly they keep wanting to walk away from me after chapter 4

is this avoidable?
should i be less 'benevolent', kill a good citizin for a change?

If you reputation goes over 18 any evil character will leave your party. As
Monty would put it, "I've about had enough of your nice-nice!"

What is your current reputation? If it is 'heroic' - 19 or 20 - then
evil-aligned characters such as Xzar and Montaron will no longer wish to
stay in your group.

And yes, killing an innocent will significantly lower your reputation (by 10
points), and other actions can lower it by lesser amounts. Take a look at
the tables on pages 144-146 of the manual for more information on the
effects of reputation on the game.

you got it, get your rep down by zapping a citizen somewhere, but it's
easy to overdo it, so be careful.

They are probably unhappy because your reputation is too good. Why do you want
them? I dropped them when I found better characters in chapter two or three.If
you leave them they will wait where you leave them. They will rejoin you any
time you want.

They will also leave if you don't do their quest fast enough.

Hi André;

They're quest is to get to Nashkel and see the Mayor.

The Mayor says "I recognize XZar in your party"

This happened to me. My reputation was normal. My party was hurting.
After trying to rest several times, they said they had to get to Nashkel
and left my party.

Once they see the Mayor, you can reform your party and they will return.
I'm not sure if they will rejoin before seeing the mayor.

Things may be different if they agree to go with you to see your friends
at the Friendly Arms Inn.

Hope this helps;
Rick

Hi Sabrine;

That's the quest given by the Mayor of Naskhell. He also
rewards you.

Xzar and Montaron only wish to see the Mayor.
Xzar and Montaron are NPC mercenaries, who know it
is safer to travel in a party than alone.

Khallid and Jahiera are 'friends' (AD&D Henchmen) with a
similar ambition: see the Mayor of Naskhell. But as henchmen,
they won't desert you.

Imoen is a AD&D Henchman too. She will stick with you always.

In AD&D, Charisma can be used to determine the number of Henchmen
you are allowed to have. (They would share 50% XPs). Henchmen are
usually controlled by the Player and not by the Dungeon Master.

Hmmm, I wonder what the original poster's PC's Charisma was when
Xzar and Montaron left the party?

You need to go there anyway, so I don't really consider that a quest......

BUT getting there in a timely fashion IS their prerequisite for
staying. You can't wander all over the maps and keep them. It
functions as if it were a character-appeasing quest.

Hi Claire;

I haven't finished the single player game as yet. But I started a TCP/IP
online multi-player game with a friend. I am trying to build up a 'NPC
stable'. I found a nice warehouse in Beregost (where you meet Kagain). It
has lot's of shelves and barrels, boxes and sacks for stashing stuff.
The plan is to do 'a character-appeasing quest' for all NPC's I meet and
drop them of at the warehouse. Then I can use them whenever I need a
specialist for a quest. Does anyone know if it would be possible to acquire
all NPC's in my NPC stable?
I thought this would be a great online slot to load and play from.

I have six NPC's now after 3 hours of play (6 days, 17 hours game time).
Xzar, Monteron, Imoen, Khalid, Jahiera, and Kagain.

So far I know ...

Kagain was easy to appease :)
I know I can acquire that Bard in Beregost.
I think I can acquire that Ranger south of CandleKeep.

I have never done Edwin's quest.
I have never done Minsc's quest.
I have never done the stoned girl at the carnival's quest.

Xan seems to be a problem. Has anyone kept him around long enough? (He was
investigating the Naskhell problems too. Perhaps getting the bandit leader
is enough?)

I haven't met any other NPC's, my high-water mark is Chapter three.

TIA;
Rick

In Beregost, just west of the town crier: Mouse position 1526, 2058.
The door is hidden under the roof, moving the mouse over the roof will
reveal the door.

P.S. I got Minsc and Dynaheir added to my NPC stable last night. There is
still room in there for more :)

Does anyone know if I can do Edwin now?

that npc warehouse in Beregost west of the town crier is a great idea.
you could develope a few [say to at least 3rd level or 4th, park them do some
more -capkill the game though so you go up too]
